Vista has gotten a lot better lately. Applications tend to run faster with it too, so far as I can tell.

(I like the macs too, but they're just too expensive. I can get a good used Windows laptop for a couple of hundred bucks these days.)

Good point, Chet. I'm running Firefox 3.0.1 and no problems at all.

I have the latest Firefox and love it. I rarely use IE anymore. I've also downloaded some very nice skins for it.

I was having a ton of problems before the new service pack. It took almost two hours to install and remove old files. Now everything works great!

Oh boy! an Apple vs. PC war. Here's my 10 cents, my 2 cents is free. There is no difference between the two. There were differences about 10 years ago. Now they are basically the same, except one asks "do you really want to do this?" on a regular basis. I use both: PC at home (which I'll admit I like better) and Apple at work.

Service pack 3 for the most part is all the updates to SP2 and a few other in one update. Some parts of it where updates that I did not installed into SP2 because of conflicting issues with other software and MS new about it but still put it in SP3 even though they new they had to patch the problems the first time for SP2 or gave you work arounds. The biggest issue is now with SP3 and IE7 software like Roxio media and Adobe Photo Shop can no longer access Outlook when you create a photo or video email it now says sender unknown it will not reconize that other software on the system so it is obsolete for this feature. Why they would put this back in SP3 who knows it caused a lot of problems for people running these software programs where we had to remove it but you cant remove just a part of SP3. MS did finaly come out with a patch for SP2 for the Adobe software so you could install it but it would not work until you manualy went into your regestry and changed several things there stuff you have to becarfull doing or you can mess things up bad. Adobe put out a fix that ran the MS fix and also went into you regestry and made the changes for you but neither will work with SP3 so the problem is back and dont look like there are going to fix anytime soon we will see because I did put SP3 on about 3 months ago and nothing yet. I do not allow automatic updates because I like to wait and see what problems arrise from all those who do.Then I pick and manualy install the later. The XP SP3 pack took about 25 minutes to download and remove old files. I do not see a noticable change in speed though and I beleive they say they are now going to support Xp SP3 untill 2015. Our other desktop is running Vista and my laptop is Vista but I still think the XP Pro is the best. Somtimes I think Vista is going to be another Millenium 2000 we no how that went after two years of pushing it on people. I think their will be a SP4 for the XP systems whether Home Edition or Pro Edition like mine. To this day almost all the computers coming into the JHU are running XP Pro not Vista and the visual departments get both Xp Pro operating systems and Mac Pro systems which I have seen are now 8 core.

My updates are on automatic. I've got nothing in the programs list that says SP3, but I got a bunch of updates on 8/13/08. Could that be it?

Even the files marked SP2 are gone!?

No the service pack has to be done manualy because it will uninstall all your updates and put the new XP SP3 in with a few other features it is not a lot differrent but they are not going to contiue support of SP2. You have to go onto MS website and choice it to update, I have heard that some have taken a hour or more to do the change. You are not just updating you are changing the operating system.

First off Stratmansteve and anyone else who cares.
Go to Start - then All Programs - then Accesories - then System Tools - then System Information. The second line has OS version information. It should say something like: blah blah blah Service Pack 3 blah.

I did the same thing with automatic updates. Service Pack 3 updated automatically overnight. When I booted up the next day, everything worked fine. The day after the next I booted up and I couldn't log into the internet, it wanted to log in but was extremely slow. It was even slower than dialup. I figured the internet was down, I have a cable modem. So I waited a couple days and called my provider, they were ok. So I knew I had just updated to the latest service pack. Microsoft India (anyone who answers the phone there) had me disable all my add-ons in IE. I then called my internet provider and they remotely reset my connection and after that everything was ok. So some of my add-ons are incompatable with IE.

I don't have a laptop, but if I ever get one I'm seriously looking at Apple. It doesn't seem like they have as many problems as Microsoft does. And now it seems Apple is letting you load more Windows programs. The only thing I don't like about Apples are the screen size and the price.

Yep, looks like I'm still running SP2. So I guess you think it isn't a good idea to "upgrade" for lack of a better word?

Most of the problems are when using IE7 people who are using IE6 dont seem to have the issues. Also once you put the SP3 on your system you will see that the unistall is no longer available in the add remove programs they took that availability away but if you have IE6 you can still uninstall and run what you want. MS says if you wish to go back to IE6 you have ti uninstall SP3 put SP2 back in then do so. Then they got some long reason why this has to be done this way. I never have any of my systems set to auto update because when they send there uupdate out the first week of each month I will wait 2 or 3 weeks to see what issues come up with people then I pick which I want. MS has caused a lot of software problems for other applications that are not theres but if they are not going to support the old service packs what can you do.
