Hey, guys. I've been wanting to make this thread for a day or two. This thread will be all about tips, from what equipment to use, to licks and styles. A person asks, another answers.

I'll start.

I want to become better at soloing. Does anybody know what I can do to improve?

*(Edit): Ok, thanks for the soloing tips, but I don't need much more guys. Answer the other guys' questions or my other one.*

Also, has anybody had any expierience with Laney Amplifiers? I am looking at some, and I want to know more about the brand and their products.

You just gotta practice doing it. Got a mix of backing tracks? Just solo over them repeatedly (and give the Allman Brothers "Fillmore East" album a few listens to -- soloing over the extended portions of Whipping Post is good exercise).

practice constantly and LISTEN, you could be practicing rubbish, it doesnt do anyone any good. Pay attention during practice and it will reward you more. I spent weeks soloing on autopilot and spent years trying to lose the crapness i'd inflicted myself with.

Slow down to play faster and player fewer notes.

I'm looking for my first amp after making the switch from acoustic to electric. I got a fender strat as my guitar, and I have to make the decision; a roland cube 20 or a fender g-dec jr.? I've been wondering for awhile now and any help would be appreciated.

I was never a fan of NPM as a measure of soloing skills. To me it should be about melody. But that's just me.

That's great advice. Especially when you join a band. Listening is very important 1) to know that you are soloing in the correct key/mode, and 2) to hear the cues to changing sections of the song, changing dynamics, and when to end. The Drummer and Vocalist usually guide such changes. In my band, we call the drum cues the "yellow lights" .... red lights (stops) usually follow. And you gotta be listening for them. After 13 years with him, I can stop on a dime with my drummer.

aint it a pleasure when you get a drummer who is like that, the majority of decent drummers i come across are no more than breathing metronomes but when you get a good one you know about it.

on a side note

Speed playing is never good for practicing, infact one of the best excersizes you can practice is to solo on 1 note only. Limit yourself to 1 note in key with a song to play along to and rip on just one note. It sorts the men from the boys. Its harder than it sounds and will sort you phrasing technique out.

Get a Gdec. Its a great amp.

USE THE PINKY

Makes life so much easier. It improves your playing so much when you get used to it and all the extra range it gives you.

That's an excellent tip. I have a bad habit of forgetting I have that finger when I'm playing.

yes try listening to jam tracks. Also try practicing scales. Learn as much as you can. Start with major, minor, pentatonic... . Every scale sort of goes back to the major scale. Try to learn notes as well as the shapes of a scale. In two words: music theory.

Try jazz tracks, they're a great practice for soloing.

Now i have an EQ question.

I know that when you do EQ on your amp, it's supposed to copensate for your hearing limits. Treble and bass should both be the same and high, and mid should be a little lower. But i sort of like a trebly sound, where i turn the treb up, the mids and bass down, with mids a little higher than bass. I really don't like bass in my sound. Is that okay?

anD IT IS TRUE THAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO HAVE A LITTLE MORE MIDS FOR OVERDRIVE, correct?

Thanks.

Here's a tip. Don't eat an entire box of Triscuits by yourself in the span of 15 minutes.

Two fave.

Use good cords with a circuit breaker

Don't get stuck in one genre of music. Or two or three.
