Location: Peckham: where the snow leopards roam
My wife and I were diving on a tiny atoll in the Indian Ocean, and one day visited a spot famous for sharks. After only minutes underwater a big grey tipped reef shark came out of the gloom, and then another and then another. At one point we reckoned we were amongst upwards of two dozen reef sharks, most of them about seven feet long, measuring by eye against my wife (who is about five-four). Very exciting, and not particularly scary, at least till we were back on the boat and had time to think it over.

The afternoon dive was in a relaxing, pretty spot: just drift along and take in the sights. At one point a little Picasso trigger fish came out of the coral and seemed to be squaring up to us. If you don't know, it looks like this, maybe eight inches long, probably less:

Not a frightening fish. However, it seemed to want a fight, and swam up to my wife and head butted her. Then it came over to me and did the same. No doubt, we were in its territory, and perhaps it had a nest with eggs nearby. It went back to my wife and swam round and round her, butting her and even trying to bite (or gum) her fingers.

We started laughing, and then laughing more and more. Soon we were laughing so hard we were nearly piddling in our wetsuits; it became hard to maintain buoyancy and keep our regulators in our mouths.

At that point we realised this was the fish’s deadly defence mechanism. Its strategy was to kill us by drowning due to helpless mirth. Much the most dangerous encounter of the day...

Cheers - C
