it's going to be layla...the duane allman part.

ALso virtually anything by hendrix... and yes i have to agree on little wing. ALso...red house, one rainy wish, hey joe, idk voodoo child (slight return). Purple Haze is one of the less soulful, but it still rocks.

And all of the previous songs you people have metnioned.

"Happy Birthday" is my favorite. It makes people happy. And it can be improvised on in a variety of different ways, from jazz to classical, and still make people happy.

There is a very good "bootleg" of this one from a show in Japan.

It isn't a totally instrumental piece... but DG's intro to "Sorrow" by Pink Floyd always gets to me.

There's no guitar, but I have to say John Coltrane's A Love Supreme.

As far as guitar stuff goes, any song from the Allman Brother's Fillmore album (especially In Memory of Elizabeth Reed).

I'm glad the 'Sleepwalk' issue was cleared up.... good job & excellent info!
In case you didn't notice, MAZDA used it for a TV ad some years ago.
NOTE: The Ventures version can be found on their very First ~Vinyl~ 33 RPM album, (Dolton Records) called: Walk, Don't Run - BST 8003
If you ever hear the entire album, a very emotional song called 'My Own True Love' (Tara's Theme) from the movie Gone With The Wind is well worth a listen. (Chokes me up every time! LOL)

Having been initially influenced by Guitar Instrumentals like Rebel Rouser, 40 miles of Bad Road or Theme From Dixie by Duane Eddy, or material by Link Wray, Chet Atkins, Les Paul and (of course) The Ventures.... I eventually made a career out of being a musician. I still perform songs such as Ghost Riders (in the Sky) like the Ventures did and I add parts from 3 other tunes of theirs: Dark Eyes, Diamond Head & Runnin' Wild. Another song recoded by the Ventures that has some laid-back emotion to it is called Moon of Manakoora. The Ventures also did a version of NUTTY, taken from The Nutcracker Suite; MUCH better than the Emerson, Lake & Palmer version (IMHO). Harlem Nocturne, Apache, Telstar, Lonely Bull and many, many more have influenced a lot of guitarists. The song by Hendrix called Third Stone From The Sun, Jeff Beck's albums and others like Steve Vai and especially Marty Friedman just ooze emotion.

The one thing distinct about emotional tunes, instrumental OR vocal, is that feelings can surface in two different ways...... listening or performing. I think listening is more of a memory-reminiscence, whereas performance is much more physically in-the-moment and a little tougher to deal with.

PS: If you'd like to hear some intrumentals posted on the web that I was involved with (Arranging & Performing), go to PureVolume dot com and enter FANTUM in the search bar. Check on the Photos tab for info on 5 other instrumental bands as well. (leave out any & and ' in the search box. IE: dondragonsbreath)

As a melodic instrumental guiatrist wih no interest in singing, it is this opinion, most any good song with or without lyrics can be emotional. Otherwise, why play it?

That said, a few which in this opinion sound emotional-great played as instrumental-alone on electric guitar.

Harlem Nocturne. Bossalou / Misrlou. Pipeline. Apache. Sleepwalk. Walk Don't Run. Tangerine. Chariots Of Fire. The Wim-o-weh song. Stand By Me. Summertime. Blue Tango. Exodus. Somewhere My Love. Bali Hai. Moonlight Serenade. Desifinado. Day-O. I'll Never Find ANother You. World Of Our Own. Till There Was You. Tenderly. Kon-Tiki. A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square. Night Train. Sitting On Top Of The World. Baja. Spanish Blue. Wild As The Sea. Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring. They Call The Wind Maraiah. Sloop John B. The Lonely Bull. Theme From The Endless Summer. Moon River. Ebb Tide. Sweet Home Chicago. Mr. Moto. Zorba The Greek. Never On Sunday. Stranger On THe Shore. Stairway To Heaven. The Sounds Of Silence. Ode To Joy.

'Could go on.

And if you are adventurous enough...on electric guitar only, William Tell Overture and Tocotta and Fugue in Dm.

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by The Smashing Pumpkins.

It has the same name of the album and it's the first track. Just a pretty piano piece. I like it.
