:?: Hi guys, I'm new to electric guitars. I just inherited a Fender Highway 1 strat and a Fender DSP Deluxe 90 amp from my uncle who passed away 3 weeks ago. The problem is when i plugged in the amp I can just hear a low hum and no sound as I strum the guitar. I don't know which one is at fault, the guitar or the amplifier? What shall I do? Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear about your uncle. I would try to problem solve by trying a different amplifier or a different guitar. You could also have a disconnected wire in your input jack or in the guitar cable. Take your guitar to a pawn shop or a music store and try a amp there.

Try wiggling the cable around, especially near the ends and see what happens. If some sound tries to come out at times it is likly the cable.

With passive electronics (I.E- pickups that don't require batteries), you'll tend to get a bit of humming with playing your guitar through your amp. After a while, you become totally numb to it though.

Also, the way you have your pickup selector switch set can effect it too. My Strat hums like crazy if I'm playing from the bridge, middle, or neck pup only. If I play through the middle and neck/bridge at the same time though, the humming may die down to nothing.

Also, sometimes the amp settings can effect the hum-level too. Like if your gain is too high or something...but I couldn't tell you directly...since my piddly little G-DEC Jr. gets NO EQ settings, just a gain, volume, and "tone" knob....it has things to be desired.

Sorry to hear about your uncle though. :(

A quick test to determine whether it's the amp or guitar is to plug the cable into the amp, then run your thumb over the guitar-end of the cable. Listen for pops or similar sounds that indicate that the amp is picking up a signal. If it's not, then try adjusting some knobs on the amp. Perhaps the gain is turned all the way down, and you need to increase it.

FIrst, turn on the amp without anything plugged in. You should be able to get the volume up to about 5 without any noise.

Then, turn the volume off and plug in only the cable. Turn up the volume again. wiggle the cable. There shouldn't be any additional noise. If there is, its new cable time.

Turn off the volume again and plug in the guitar. Change pickup selections. If the noise increases significantly increases when you plug in, consider sheilding the guitar.

Also, the power transformer in on one side of the amp. If you are within 3 feet or so of it, there will be hum.
