I am looking for something that is not too hard, but that will teach me a lot and that is actually good. I would like a blues or rock song if at all possible. I am just a beginner and want to learn something good, not something like twinkle little star. Thanks for all of the help. Any other tips are appreciated too.

Go on YouTube and search on "learn to play [title]." It's virtually guaranteed that someone will have posted a video. I've learn a lot of licks that way: Smoke on the Water, Iron Man, Wish You Were Here, Barracuda, et al. YouTube is a great source for a beginning guitar player.

Joker and the Thief by Wolfmother is a good one. Its a good way to practice hammer-ons and palm muting. Its even got an easy solo. :D

Any song that you like, think think you'd like to play.

Just for learning and strumming chords, Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix is a great beginner tune. If I recall its simply a C, G, D, A, E, repeat the whole song. Good practice for switching chords when that's a new thing for you.

SRV's "Cold Shot" has everything. A few chords, easy solo, no furious licks or overspeed, nothing too hard. A great song and a lot of fun. Good luck with your quest.

Cheers.

Locomotive Breath by Jethro Tull...or Aqualung! I don't know what to say about the solo, though.

Twikle Twinkle was the first song I learned. I'm wondering if the OP is far enough along to even make chords? Doesn't like his guitar teacher's desire to teach him notes and the neck? Want's to run before he can walk? Want's to catch up to his friends who know 5 chords?

So I guess my question is: what can you already play? What chords do you know already? Are you bored with your first few lessons and want to find the fast track? The reason I'm asking is if all you can play is Twinkle Twinkle, you probably wont be able to play any of the songs recommended above without some help.

I know quite a few chords, including some dim7s etc. I am just coming back to the guitar after a 10 year hiatus, and I was just learning then. I took a few lessons back then, and did good, according to my teacher at least. I would just like to play a song to give myself a goal I can work to, and not too simple of one. I thought I would pick your more experienced brains for a good one. I could play a good part of She talks to Angels by the Black Crowes, but that was back years ago. I think the way I learn is more of attaining a goal so to speak. I am enjoying learning the neck, and finding new scales to practice also. All of your help is appreciated, even though I am sure I am tying to "run before I walk". Doesn't everyone to some extent?

For chords, I look in my dad's old chord book from Mel Bay. Every note's got (exagerating now) 20 chords and 10 ways to play it! 143 pages worth of beautiful chords!

Yeah man, I tried to walk before I ran. I wanted to be cool. I had a teacher who was a Berklee grad. He kept talkin scales, scales, scales and I kept talking songs, songs, songs. I did get him to teach me Steve Howe's Mood for a Day. He figured at least it was classically based and I'd get something out of it.

Since you've already got a start, I'd learn what you listen to. Get a chord book of your favorite band. Find chord charts for your favorite songs. There's tabs and chords for songs available all over the net. Google guitar tabs. You'll get plenty of hits.

How about... Modest Mouse's "Float on".

The riff is fun.
