I wonder if that's some sort of retaliation to the Saudi oil reserves being bombed with drones?

I think it was. Things are heating up everywhere, it seems. What was it somebody said about, living in interesting times?

The U.S. now imports very little crude oil so prices should remain relatively stable for the moment.

OTOH, those poor shlubs in Europe and Asia......BOHICA*.

Yeah, you can certainly say that. It's been quite the dumpster fire lately.

We here in Winnipeg we have some of or the lowest fuel prices in the country. This is thought to have some relationship to our severe weather needs, but no certainty as to why.

Low at $1.06 Cdn. per litre
Or in US Funds - $ .74 per litre
4 litres = 1 Amn. gallon
(A Cdn gallon is larger. 1.20095 more)
Winnipeg lowest regular price is
$2.96 US per Amn. gal.
My taking a trip across the line would amount to approximately $4.25 Cdn for 1 American gallon at this rate.

High at $1.10 Cdn per litre
Or in US Funds - $ .78 per litre
Winnipeg highest regular price is
$3.22 US per Amn. gallon

Compare that with Vancouver
Reputedly, the highest price in the country:

Avg. $1.65 Cdn per litre
Or in US funds - $1.33 per litre
Or $5.32 US per Amn gallon
[i]My taking a trip across the line would amount to approximately $6.60 Cdn for 1 American gallon at this rate.

Now if our artificially deflated dollar for trade and whatnot balony were normalized as it was before the present government we would see sanity and similar prices or better across the border.

Time to trade up to a Toyota Prius or a Nissan Leaf.

Based on this week’s snow and ice storm that freakily left us with the biggest power outage in history across this province (declared a state of emergency for some areas) where we are power rich (exporting more electricity than we can consume), planned outages in California and the related Grid management, the 3500 miles I just put on through the Rockies and the barren prairie, I’ll decline, Arjay.

My 40 mpg on a trip was not bad considering the gas eaters commuting daily long distances in big town Vancouver and elsewhere. I don’t hate alternative (not environmental) electric vehicles. There is an older proven Prius next door and a new Leaf (nice little car) where I visited in a predominant Tesla city. In fact I have a very low mileage 10 year old car that will be changed if the right one comes along. I’m on the fence to see what the next development will give us (even more - who the players will be); but, I gotta tell ya that putting on 500 - 700 miles in a day, depending on conditions, can be no picnic, even more so with limited roadside 1 hour fast recharging maximums and, perhaps, multiple stops.

Think about it. If you pull in when someone else has grabbed the charger the odds are you won’t have to wait an hour before you charge yours; but, it could take longer. Maybe, 2 hours or more of your time, dictated by getting a spot early enough so you don’t have to wait long before you plug that baby in, and with the up and coming driver lineup, who knows? Let’s hope it’s a facility you want to hang out with for your downtime. Do that twice in a day with the same crew heading your direction. Uh, extra hours added to your trip. That’ll help you find the hotel you want with or without a charging station for your morning rise.

One thing I noticed traveling. Electric car owners are really nice, they’re like classic car or boat owners. Nobody had a brawl to see who got the first hour of charging.
A big city or small town trip with the odd day jaunt? I get it. This country will always have the adventurous, but cool as electrics are, just like traveling this big sometimes remote sparsley populated country, electrics have a way to go. They’ll get there eventually. That’ll probably happen when we dump the 737 Max and find our flights will be in pretzel and peanut filled gliders and sail planes. Okay. Maybe, sooner. :P
YMMV

I have too little time left on this rock to waste any by standing in line waiting to charge up some battery-powered econobox.

I'll take my "go juice" from a pump, thankyewvurrymuch.

 A thought came to mind. Many years ago I worked on a program with a guest who was related to a fella who was a partner in ownership of a foundry.

The man he spoke of was a bit of a local legend, a car buff, and an inventor on the side. Rumour has it, as the story goes, he joined the group of fortune hunters who strived to find a way to improve gas mileage. Because he could, he designed and built an improved carburetor. I can’t say how improved it was thought to be, only that his invention gathered enough interest to gain offshore and this side of the pond curiosity. Apparently one of the big three found out, and they either saw it or shelved it.

Anyhow, as the story continues, the engineers were instructed to not alter this fuel saving carburetor in any way. Instead they were instructed to come up with a solution to discourage others by making this gadget or future similar alternatives a failure or a legal issue. No easy task.

Here’s where the story becomes doubtful and yet credible. Gasoline in those days was clear. There were no promotional additives as we see today. Shortly after this carburetor improvement was presented colour appeared in the clear glass displays of those pumps. The colour included additives. Hmmm? You got it. What worked before somehow quickly and mysteriously became a dud. A lot of questions remain as to how or even if this could be done. No matter actually. What we do know is that something cooperative amongst oil companies, other builders, and now battery/fuel cell companies, and Motor City exists. It is important to note that the early carburetor existed (beginning in the late 1800s for cars) even amongst fuel injection which was first invented in 1902 with injection having some car popularity shortly after WWII and then finding limited favour in the 50s. Still, carburetors took us as far as the 80s!

Did yesteryear’s new fangled carburetor exist for real? Can’t say, but it is known others have been made throughout the years, and most of them came without a “Eureka”! I knew someone who claimed close to 70 mpg with a rodded tweaked Mini.

We know additives exist, and that additives changed throughout the years, along with cleaner burns, better performance claims, and higher pump prices. Additives could have kept mileage per gallon controlled for better or worse. While there certainly are low mileage vehicles even today, the better mileage ones came much later than sooner. Some of this progression only showed up when regulated by the same authorities who control our environmental and transportation fate today. They, however, are not wanting to lose their invested support from either side of the arguments (Well fancy that? Quite an accomplishment! Unless handouts are involved). In the 70s we smartly added anti-pollution equipment to add clean air (or so we thought without maintenance and mandatory checkups YMMV), and we introduced wasted fuel. The alternatives could have seen trips from A to B using and producing less contamination for the environment; but instead, proponents were led to believe this quickly embraced (or not) radical new promotion was the answer. As usual, details were hidden, overlooked, or ignored. That’s a convenient trending fad elsewhere today. Oil production increased with demand, new cars were built and sold, people were employed for a cause that proved to be less rewarding than believed, and things were good; but. that’s a whole other topic. Add to the fact that amongst the amount of manufacturers world wide there has been more alike than different with technology and propulsion. Some of this relates to practicality and distribution. The choices made can easily be questionable though.

That brings us to the distance available with a fully charged electric car also with a vintage beginning. Today’s electrics can travel distances as low as the 50s range or into the 300 mile range; but, cost is the kicker. We are used to seeing high mileage gas cars priced less than many of our luxury and utility gas guzzlers. With electric the role is reversed with high mileage electrics coming in at a premium. A great way to promote the obvious.

Remember the very first relatively inexpensive Japanese cars that had great mileage? They were unusually dependable and ran forever while the rest of the car disintegrated. I do. I had one. Oh sure, we know they’ll get better. They always do until they get replaced by the latest greatest as usual. Some things get better and some things are shaved for profit or to facilitate change. Are the car companies going to play electric mileage games simply because they can and have in the past? My guess is they are.
FYI
How far we’ve progressed:
https://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2010/05 ... range.html

Now ya know, and those old, then desirable for environmental reasons, electrics are valuable collectors. Bonus! :D
Pop a large screen GPS, backup camera. cell phone, satellite or Internet radio, surround sound speaker system, a few safety features like custom brakes, LED lights, and maybe add a trailer for storage into and onto those buggies and there you have it. You’ll want heated seats though. Don’t forget the racing stripe. and groovy Tuner decal. 8)
On second thought, that’ll use a lot of ‘lectricity.
ZooooooooomZooom

Great thread, Mike. :D

I'm in Kansas City and we are sitting at about $2.30 right now, however, I imagine it will drop as we get closer to election time.

When we left upstate NY less than a month ago to move to North Carolina, we were paying around $2,40 a gallon.
Now in North Carolina, we’ve seen gas as low as $2.14 a gallon.
They offer an 88 octane here (E15) with 15% ethanol even cheaper IF your car can handle it.

It's been staying around $2.55 a gallon here, pretty much. Maybe a few cents difference in some places. I just paid $2.14 a gallon tonight, because of Stop & Shop gas points that I have saved up with 400 points.
