I've been putting together compilation playlists and I know that I'm forgetting some
good music/musicians/bands. I start with a "best of" or "greatest hits" and then search
for other AOR (album oriented rock) favorites.

That being said, what are your most favorite greatest hits albums? :?:

Several. But the one that comes to mind over the rest, Iron Butterfly / "The Best Of Iron Butterfly: Light And Heavy".

I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of "greatest hits albums". For the most part, I think they were just another way for the labels to get you to buy their product.

But that doesn't mean I think that there aren't some really great albums that there aren't out there to snag songs from.

In no particular order, the Stones, Let it Bleed, maybe the greatest R&R album of all time, with the exception of "Country Honk"

The Allman Bros. "Live at the Philmore East".

Pink Floyd, "Dark side of the Moon"

Pink Floyd, "Wish You Were Here"

Dire Straits, "Sultans of Swing"

Ry Cooder, "Bop Till You Drop"

Bloomfield, Kooper, and Stills, "Super Session"

Jeff Beck, "Blow by Blow"

And then there are songs.

ZZ Top, "La Grange" and "Blue Jean Blue"

The Doors, "Roadhouse Blues"

Al Green, Van Morrison, Jerry Garcia and Merle Saunders, maybe the best version of "After Midnite" and "Expressway to your Heart", but I digress, these are my opinions, not yours.

There are others, but I've rambled on enough.

Isn't that what makes us individuals here?

Maybe that will spark some synapse of your brain to think of a song that you temporarily forgot.

Cheers, vinyl

Probably my favorite of all time would be The Best of Bowie, closely followed by 10cc's Greatest Hits. There are others that have had much play over the years such as Snap by The Jam considered to be their Greatest Hits album and The Best of Blondie and one that I think everyone of a certain age remembers is Queen's Greatest Hits. And another that's always worth a listen is The Housemartins's Now That's What I Call Quite Good which is their Greatest Hits album. Squeeze's Greatest Hits is another good one.

As a teen with limited resources, greatest hits albums were a great way for me to get a bunch of songs from my favorite artists on one (or two) disks. Some of my favorite of all time...

Queen -- "Greatest Hits" and "Classic Queen"
David Bowie -- "Changesbowie"
Beatles -- Red and Blue Albums
Billy Joel -- "Greatest Hits Vol. I & II"
Aerosmith -- "Greatest Hits"
Rush -- "Chronicles"
Doors -- "Weird Scenes inside the Gold Mine"

Aerosmith's "Rocks" is right up there!

You, bet, Mike! Truly a classic album, and pretty influential, too. "Rocks" was apparently the album that inspired Slash to first pick up a guitar.

Great choices Ralph! I thought about it too but then every song on Jimi and the Experience albums is a greatest hit IMHO.
