Former Cream and Blind Faith drummer Ginger Baker was hospitalized earlier this week due to an undisclosed ailment, according to family and close friends......

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/musi ... al-890731/

Aside from his previously acknowledged cardiac issues, he also suffers from COPD and degenerative osteo-arthritis.

A few prayers for him might not be a bad idea at this point.

Oh God! I knew it was just a matter of time for Ginger to have something go more wrong.

I very sad day for music as a Master of the drums to pass on. As when a friend Jack died, so has Ginger. God Bless you Ginger, I hope you're now at peace, and in a better place.

Thanks, Arjay for the thread and the informative links. Really great and sad at the same time.

I lived in a tourist town that was a bit of old England and many of my friends were and are from the old country. I, as a drummer, hung with half a dozen other drummers. In my high school years, early 60s, friends would travel to Swinging England and return to this side of the pond to talk of this great drummer raising attention. The cool name of “Ginger Baker” was floating around before we actually heard him. Anxious to hear Ginger, we were pleased to find out that he lived up to his reputation then as he had in other ways throughout his life.

Until the early 90s (when home computing arrived at my doorstep) I was a big fan of Rolling Stone magazine. Later not so much. While there are some great reasons to read and not read it, I found the magazine to be lacking in choice of content and somewhat unreliable when tipping the scales and becoming even more promotional for self serving reasons. Then Rap and pop became the norm, and politics was on the other side of the border. It was okay, but just okay for me. YMMV I looked at some articles and Annie Leibovitz photos, and disregarded and paid for the rest.

Canada and the U.S. have great informational and entertaining mags to be sure; but, I found the Brits, while sharing our footsteps too, can be and are more critical in an accepting sort of way that can add to credibility without having skewed or compromised the reporting that pleases sponsors, owners, and editors amongst the loyal fan base (great honest critical reference is available for music gear, Home Entertainment, and automobiles for example). Successful magazines can and do thrive on this open door principal where others fail or fear to tred. The opposite is true too as seen with RS. Unfortunately, here the cost of a Brit magazine is crazy. RS has notable great photo shoots and is entertaining with celebrity contributions, however, in it’s own way. I have a few old ones, like the 3D cover sitting around. I wonder how Ginger would be graded in a Brit mag.

Case in point. RS named Ginger number 3 of top 100 drummers. Ginger came in at number 23 amongst all drummers on a 50 Greatest Drummers of All Time for a more definitive American Modern Drummer magazine and, amongst the listed rock drummers only, Ginger peaked at number 13. In perspective Steve Gadd bumped Baker’s RS’s 3 standing. In MD Gadd was found to be number 3 in Rock (6 overall) (Vinnie Colaiuta number 4 in Rock/7 overall). Bonham was number 2 overall in MD (his status with Rock being number 1. . . same as RS), and my man Rich was, not surprisingly, number 1 at top of the overall MD list. Homeboy Peart (Rich’s fave) was 3 overall and 2 for Rock in MD; but, RS had Peart at 4 behind Ginger at 3 (seriously?). Questionable is Modern Drummers’ Ringo 9 overall (6 for Rock) who inched out Krupa at 10. In Rolling Stone Ringo is 14 and Rich 15 Ya ya ya. Rolling Stone didn’t disappoint me thinking maybe I should have spent the extra change for a peek at that historical and unique trivia. ROTFL Now I know the vaping can’t be far from the lineup table. Must have been a horn or violin player that came up with that RS list. Knowing how Ginger idolized favourite jazz drummers, I think even he would be tummy laughing with me.

Everyone marches or dances to the beat of a different drummer. It really doesn’t matter what values these favourite lists give, only to know that they are not equal or the same when referencing (or not) skill, credibility, or popularity. Best is difficult to choose at best unless broken down. I’d be happy just to make the list. Ginger, deservingly did, and with the rest of the best. Perhaps, Ginger is number 1 in your books. Wherever, he is on your list and mine I will say one thing is sure, Ginger Baker was one he11 of a drummer and he will be missed.

FSB

Thanks, for the triplets and double foot beats Ginger.
