I'll start this with one of my favorite bands, Sly & The Family Stone. Bassist Larry Graham, Jr. inventor of the Thumpin' and Pluckin technique of bass guitar playing is playing a Fender Jazz Bass in this video. When I saw them the first time in early 69 at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago the entire crowd was on their feet dancing for the set and encores. I play with a pick as most of you know but Larry gets my respect, he is the best. Add as many funk/soul/R&B bands as you like. I miss this music and the groove it generates.

Had to edit again. The videos here before have all been taken down by youtube. This is the second version of the band that I saw in 73 at White City in London. Still good but not the original.

I love the RHCP cover of HIgher Ground. Flea gets a real groovy slap bass rhythm going, quality.

Excellent thread idea, everybody needs to have a funky good time once in a while, if not every day.

I didn't know Bobby Womack was Sam Cooke's backing guitarist or that he wrote and originally recorded The Rolling Stones' first UK No. 1 hit, "It's All Over Now", thanks lungimsam, very cool 8) RHCP are some funky punks and I dig them too, Tower of Power rule,
Capo to the heart of the matter the Godfather of the whole thing, thanks.

Glad you enjoyed the Bobby Womack. He has so many great tunes and cool bass lines. He is one talented cat.

And don't forget everybody, that even Paul McCartney gets his freak on and tightens up on his backstroke from time to time, too. (everything is on the one on these tracks):

And here is some stank-Dennys-dumpster-funk for y'all (I love the wah-work on this one):
