Although i am not a fan of gibson, my acquaitance/friend just seems more inclined to them. I just don't know where else to post this! He currently owns a squier strat, and is getting a les paul on his birthday i think.

But here's where i need your opinion. Should he get the Zakk Wylde (Gibson) model, or if he's willing to spend that much money on something that has an artist's name on it, and just for the name on it and the color, or should he get a studio lp or maybe a classic?

Something from Gibson's "faded" series plays just as good. The only difference being that the finish can be damaged easier. Plus they're a lot cheaper and they sound equally as good as any other actual Les Paul Studio.

The Zakk Wylde custom would be a bit of a mistake though. I've played a guitar with an EMG 81/85 set and they just don't sound so hot. I wouldn't recommend the ZW custom at all.

Or, you know, there's also the Fender alternative...

Tell him to get an Epiphone Elitist model. They're about the same price as the faded Gibson's, but much nicer. The only differences are that it doesn't have the name on the headstock and it isn't US made. Other than that, amazing guitars.

Stay away from the faded Gibson's, they are not worth it. Gibson signature guitars are way over priced. Studios are not that good either.
If he really wants a Gibson I would say check out the Standards. And maybe look for used.

Then spend the rest on a nice STRAT!!!!!!

+1.

The fadeds are trumped by the Elitist Epiphones. The artist models aren't much of an upgrade over the standard and custom models, but the price begs to differ. I'd really only recommend either the standard or custom models (the custom is still pricey). If he wants a guitar like that, I'd personally tell him to look into PRS. They make some amazing guitars which are comparable and cheaper. Even an Ibanez S series may be a good fit. Those are much better values than Gibson in my mind.

Sounds like your bud has the scratch for a LP standard. I think that they are the best model that the LP comes in with the classic being a close 2nd.

I do agree with the melody maker. If he can find a 2 pickup model,. he should jump all over it and spend the rest on a LP standard. Should run him about 2k total.

I replaced my Gibson Standard with a Epi. Custom Plus for 700 and it is a much better guitar then the standard was. It is a Korean made Epi.

i would love it for him to get a strat. It's just that he idolizes a lot of people who play the les paul.

He also plans the guitar to get signed by Slash. Apparently, his dad knows 'someone.'

Yeah i think the artist models are overpriced and you could get a better value from the studio or classic. But i am not really a lp guy so idk much.

I'm sure that there are Gibson forums out there. If you can't find them, use a Google search.

Personally, I wouldn't advise that he get a Gibson or a Epiphone. I'm a Hamer USA man, myself (plus they're now owned by Fender).

I chose Studio. It's the cheapest one of them, and not as pretty, but really, it's still the best. I also heard that the Zak Wilde had as much quality as it's Epiphone version, so I wouldn't go that direction.

The studio may be the best deal, but honestly, you're paying for a name and a Made in the USA sticker. The Epiphone Elitists, as I've said many times, are just as good, but people don't give them a chance because they're an epiphone. I personally think they're leaps and bounds over the studio.

Just like Squiers now adays too, people overlook them due to it being a Squier. Granted a lot of the Squiers are not that good, but if you get their top of the line stuff, it's as good as Fender's.

Chet, say it ain't so; first time ever disagreeing with you.

Shopped hard and landed a faded brown SG and it is a true sweetheart of a guitar, literally right out of the box. Personal feeling is it's Gibson's version-ish of an American Standard Tele.
