I'm either cursed or blessed that my first electric guitar was a Japanese Telecaster. I got used to the sound and feel of a Fender. Since then I've played and owned many other brands, but now 20 years later I've sold the rest and have a Strat and a Tele.

Fender designs have a distinctive sound and are really fun to play. They have a lot of twang and sparkle but can be mellow too.

Very nice. A Taylor and everything! I'm going to look at an old 70's SG today that a friend wants to sell. And I really want a Deluxe Reverb. In fact, I like your whole setup. The only thing I wouldn't buy myself is the Les Paul. I think they're too heavy to gig with.

Back on topic, when I was a kid I always dreamed that my first guitar would be a white strat like Hendrix used at Woodstock. It took me until I was 26 but my first electric was a white Strat Plus. Awesome. My second guitar was supposed to be a 335 like BB King plays. I had to settle for an Epiphone Sheraton (still a very nice guitar). Then for my third guitar I opted for another (Eric Johnson) strat just because it's the best guitar I've ever touched (including vintage models). Still dreaming of the 335...

Pardon me, I know this is a Fender site and that's why I'm here but perhaps a bit of clarification is in order.

Thank-you River.

However I must tell you, one thing that occurred to me when I got my Strat (brand new '07 or '08 American Deluxe less than 2 weeks ago) was whether it was actually heavier than my Les Paul. ('07 Gibson Les Paul Studio.)

According to my $21 digital Healthometer (certainly the calibration may be called into question, especially in this low range), when zero'd with a Herculese mini guitar stand, each guitar weighs 8.0 #. Checked and reset each a few times. Don't know how long they've been doing it, but Gibson has been routing out, 'chambering?', the mahogany body a bit before laminating the maple cap on.

And I would trade neither. They're different, but to me essential. I love them both.

I bought a Fender because I wanted a fretted bass to play in cover bands.
In '80 a guy I knew was seeling a "P" for $200. Up 'til then I had been playing fretless Gibsons.
I bought the Fender and immediately modded it to be a JPJ. Was my main bass for a good 20 years.

I had a budget of $700 in '89 when I got my '87. The thing sat for 1.5 years. I got it with set up, hard shell Fender case, new strings, for under $650 after tax. I kept coming back to it after spending time (2 hrs or so, till almost closing time), after all the other Fenders, MusicMan, and a few others they had at the Edison, NJ Sam Ash. It felt better than the MIAs the had available or the MIM. I never sold her, after all the other 15 basses I had, she's the one that keeps getting kept :D I've had other brands in between '88 to now, but she's the one I'll always keep.

A Fender Stratocaster IMO manages to look professional, smooth, and slightly devilish. Coupled with great sound, you cant miss. Gibson doesnt have that.

I don't know--SG's have that horned look. Les Paul even said so at one point.

SGs dont look professional/smooth IMO. They look great though, but I couldnt see myself wearing a suit and tie, playing some of the more upscale venues, (5 star restaurant in town we sometimes play) with an SG strapped to me.

Why not?

As far as the look you describe--a black Les Paul Custom fits it all, except maybe the devilish part. And I don't see that as a big deal.

In any case--it comes down to taste--and as I posted earlier--I like both--there's no reason I should have to choose only one--it's a false dichotomy. Some people strongly prefer one over the other--that's fine too.

There's no reason to put down one to lift up the other---let it rise or fall on its own merits, or choose both.

Tonight I have a Les Paul beside me, and it's on a break right now. Tomorrow night it could be a Fender or an Ibanez. It's all good.

Like you said, it just comes down to taste. I just think the strat looks more professional. Ive got nothing against Gibson.

And I have nothing against Strats, so that's cool.

I can't really compare guitars but basses...absolutely no competition. Precision Bass and Jazz Bass over SG Bass and Firebird any day.

I really happened in to a Fender by accident. It was my Musicmaster bass that was found in a barn in rough shape and given to me. I fell for that bass, restored it, sold the two Ibanez that I had.

When I went to acoustic I started on an Ovation cuz I fell into a good deal with it. Liked the sound but that roundback made it very uncomfortable to play. I just found a Fender Montara at a Guitar Center store and loved the feel of it, but couldn't pay the $600 they wanted. Found one on Ebay about a year later for $250 including a case.

After those two, when I decided to get an electric there was no other brand, I looked at and bought a Strat, or two.
