Waaaay back in the day when I was the "timekeeper" in a band, our Guitarist's dad had a decent job (he could afford anything) purchased him a black Fender strat (Black w/maple fb). I remember how nice those Hendrix licks sounded. Me being from the "other side" of the tracks  could only dream of such a creature. Good thing is/was that I lived directly across the street from a pawnshop. The owner would let me come in and "dream" on a daily basis. Grew up around a lot of older bluesman, so Fenders and xxxsons were always around. As we all know, when you strap one on.......there is no better feeling!

Thanks Leo...

Because the feeling is legendary!

That and because I came across a good deal on a MIM Strat when I first started playing. Now I've got six total(3 Fenders, 3 Squiers).

I got a Strat(Squire) last fall because I didn't know any better and I impule bought, something that I never do ever. Really like it so far. Have added a Blues Junior and a Boss DS-1 to my gear. As far as being an old fart and a beginner at that, I graduated H.S. in 1966 and was drafted in 1968. But I really do wish I would have attemped player a lot sooner.

Very nice. A Taylor and everything! I'm going to look at an old 70's SG today that a friend wants to sell. And I really want a Deluxe Reverb. In fact, I like your whole setup. The only thing I wouldn't buy myself is the Les Paul. I think they're too heavy to gig with.

Back on topic, when I was a kid I always dreamed that my first guitar would be a white strat like Hendrix used at Woodstock. It took me until I was 26 but my first electric was a white Strat Plus. Awesome. My second guitar was supposed to be a 335 like BB King plays. I had to settle for an Epiphone Sheraton (still a very nice guitar). Then for my third guitar I opted for another (Eric Johnson) strat just because it's the best guitar I've ever touched (including vintage models). Still dreaming of the 335...

My sister got a cheap Johnson or something like that and didn't enjoy it at all, so when it came time for me to pick out a guitar my dad and I did some research and found that Fender was the way to go. Not only was it a good guitar, but it was in my price range!!!! GIbson maybe would have had more of a chance if it weren't for that factor, but as it is, Fender was THE one for me and i'm SOOOO glad of that!!!

No particular loyalty to any brand...

...but in this opinion, when one's soul and hands and eyes and ears yearn to experience a Fender guitar, only a Fender can fulfill that need.

Sorry, modeling guitars and technology.

And Fender amps are a whole nother story; to all practical puropses, they personify, define, quantify, qualify the concept and essence of guitar amps.

I picked one because the versatility and clean tone complemented my Les Paul perfectly. I had a Squier as well and it held together like a tank. I knew the quality was good then if even the smaller branch made great products. I played a few and it felt great for me and now it's my main guitar.

For me it was a few Things:
When I got rid of my old hunk of crap acoustic I was lent a fender acoustic and enjoyed using it. When i moved to the electric it was my brother's Squier. It was from the experiences with these (and the price tag of the guitar I was eyeing) that I went with my Fender. I liked the feel of the guitar and the tone I got from it. As with a lot of guitar players some of my favorite guitarists played Fenders so I figured if it was good enough for them then I could enjoy it as well. I'll use whatever I need to get the right sound, but I prefer my Fenders

I've tried a few "others" before moving to Fender. But eventually, guys I listen to like Ray Vaughan and Hendrix (to name a few) were doing it. Then when I got my first strat, the body contour and the playability felt so right. the single coils is the sound I was looking for. Also ,a strat as the body contour of a woman only it doesnt talk back :)

Like a lot of people on this forum, I was late coming to the guitar. I finished my master's degree in December of 2007 and decided to reward myself with a guitar and lessons.

I have a few musician friends who were steering me toward a Les Paul, citing its highly vaunted "fat" tone. But I decided to take stock of the artists I want to emulate: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Dick Dale, and others. I quickly noticed a common thread--the Fender Stratocaster!

Then I went to my local Sam Ash store and checked out both the Strat and the Les Paul. I went through my entire guitar repertoire (which at the time consisted of the E-minor chord) on each guitar. The Strat's neck felt better to my hand. And the contoured body of the Strat matched my own contoured body very well. And it looks cool too!

Since I had never played guitar (or any instrument) before, I was leery of spending too much money, so I went with a Squier Standard Stratocaster and a Roland Microcube amp. My reasoning was that if I ended up not liking it, I wasn't out too much money.

Well as it turns out, I am having a blast! Just like with sex, you don't have to be good at guitar to enjoy it. The Squier is still perfectly adequate for me, but I am looking to upgrade down the road.

I also have a new goal. The San Antonio Blues Society holds an open jam every Thursday night. I've been a couple of times as an audience member, and it's a lot of fun. My goal is to play a couple of songs on stage by next summer. Wish me luck! 8)

I picked a Fender because I love the Telecaster tone and all of my heroes play Fenders. That's what made me love them.

because I went to my uncles house and played a couple of his Gibsons(before I knew how to play of course, so I was just struming them), then he handed a Fender DG-7 and I played that, he asked if I liked it and I said "yes", then he said "well, do you want it" and I said "yes"

This ia an easy one. When I was little I was always sick with stuff like pneumonia and chicken pox and since we didnt have cable, the only station our tv picked up clearly was PBS. One day there was a documentary on about Woodstock and I was amazed to see a black guy playing rock and roll. When I got better I got into my dads old buddy guy, curtis mayfield and Isley Bros. records(actual vinyls) and begged my mom to buy me this 70s Strat knockoff (which she thought was just a phase) and I have been a faithful Fender fanatic every since. When I turned 18 I got a 2500 refund back from school and the first thing I bought was a Strat and a Blues Deluxe ReIssue. I promptly did my impression on hendrix one day when me and my fiends were jammin and set my 70s style knockoff ablaze. Now I 25 and jonesin for a custom shop! That was longer than I anticipated.

Instead of?

As others have mentioned--what's wrong with both.

I'm glad to say I own a 78 Fender Mustang that plays great, sounds great and I can't imagine getting rid of.

I also own a Gibson Les Paul Custom hat plays great, sounds great and I can't imagine getting rid of.

I bought the Mustang first--not out of any contest between Fender & Gibson, but a music store had a moving sale & a great price on their Mustangs. I had just cashed my first cheque from a new job, and was in the store and had to buy it.

I got my Les Paul cheap too--it was used at a storewide 50% sale--and it had been modified by a previous owner--so it was a great price. I changed it closer to what it was originally, wired the pickups for series/parallel and it sounds great.

Both guitars suit me--which I play depends on my mood and the songs I'm playing.

Which I bought when was more a matter of timing, than preference of one over the other. If that music store with the Mustang had a Les Paul instead of the Mustang, I would have bought it. If the store with the Les Paul had been selling a Strat or a Mustang instead of a Les Paul--I would have bought it.

I won't put down Gibson to make Fender sound better or vice versa. They both have their successes and their failures. Which is better over all? I don't care. I like them both.
