Hi Elaine:

Welcome. My experience with the Mustang I amp was strictly for guitar at a friend’s home. Nice little amp.

First off, Mustang I is a guitar amp. No surprise there. So let’s start with what it isn’t to understand the options. A vocal amp is, as you know, not what this is designed for. You could use any number of vocal pedals (like a TC Helicon or Boss vocal pedal amongst others) that can be hooked up with a power amp (like a stereo amp for example) and suitable full range speakers more tuned to and more suitable for the voice. You can hookup your mic to a mixer (which will use internal or external amplification and speakers). You can get all in one systems like Fender and others make. These setups are called called a PA (Public Address) system. You might know this already; but, on the possibility that you don’t, I’ll give you a quick look at what is possible. I won't endorse one merchant over the other here as your local music store (or other) and the Net will be good resources for further information to meet your needs.

Old school used mics through guitar amps often before the glut of quality relatively inexpensive PAs hit the market and/or to meet a budget, PAs have been around for some time, however.

That said, here is an introduction should you like to read more about PAs. Rather lengthy so you might want to skip ahead and read this later:

I’m guessing that isn’t the direction or answer you require for the moment so I’ll try to help with the Mustang (or any other similar amp per se). There are some variances such as volume. clarity, and effects that make guitar amps with a vocal mic iffy. Speakers are optimized for instrument playback
and each amp in this category is tweaked for a specific instrument, acoustic, electric, bass, keyboard, and so on. and the voice instrument is not particularly included with each (although, some facilitate that function and some reproduce better than others in one or more areas). Generally, it can be made to work and often you'll find the result is compromise.

Things to consider:

1 ) Any damage will be your responsibility, but, you should be good to go with some reasonable care and attention. No worries.
2 ) Others have had success, but that is a personal thing, and if it works for you it’s all good. There is champagne taste, beer taste, and soda pop taste. You'll know If it meets your taste soon enough and that’s what counts. You can always stick with what you have and consider the alternatives if and when the time is right,
3 ) You’ll want to start with the amp volume off or very low, (preferably start with the amp shut off with your mic, for this purpose I’ll stick to dynamic microphones, plus an impedance transformer adapter as seen in the following video or similar hooked up), then introduce a clean sound (tone perhaps minimized, and no effects).
4 ) Set your desired volume and store a clean preset now! If that's possible. You’ll want to keep this preset for reference and for further muting.
5 ) With the clean setting, create your tone to your liking without effects. Make this a second preset to keep.
6 ) Now choose your effect(s) such as reverb, tremolo, delay and such or none. You’ll want to not get too crazy with those effects that are primarily geared for guitar rather than for your vocals. Reverb and such, of course, being the better known exceptions.
7 ) Now tweak your settings volume, tone, and effects (in fact all your settings, but only if necessary) with small adjustments accordingly. I often keep settings’ notes as I go so I can return to the previous settings. Make a third and final fully packed preset once tweaked or as many preset varieties as you choose; but, always keep the clean preset! Perhaps, you’ll want to also keep a master tone preset, but that could change depending on the environment at time and place of performance.
8 )You should be good to go
9 ) Turn your volume off when shutting down or unplugging. Better still see:
Tip: I moved my first preset (the one my Mustang IV amp defaults to on startup 00) and replaced it with effects off (as much as possible) and volumes off. This makes a good starting point when powering up or shutting down or just to mute.

Okay, that’s the basic concept. Here is the idea:

That should get you started. You might find more here where questions like this will get better results.

Or for a shortcut to many related posts including the previous:
Type Mustang microphone in the Search for: box at the bottom of this and/or other pages where you can search for anything likewise. You’ll find posts with answers, perhaps of interest, related to your question.

Note: The question might arise, “Can
the amp’s Auxiliary input can be used for a microphone?”

Fender says it’s primarily for “a media player such as an MP3 or CD player” What I know of that convenient auxiliary input, the input would need a preamp to boost the mic level, and the quality is not worth the effort. Others tend to agree.

This may be more or less information than you require, Elaine. I hope this helps to answer your question.

Best,
FSB

You are very welcome, Elaine. Glad I could help. That’s how it works around here. Sorry, it took awhile for my answer. Sometimes, as with other social media, for a variety of reasons, that can happen. At times, using the specific forum can return a quicker response amongst a great gang with a heap of experience and knowledge. If we don’t know, we’ll try and point you in the right direction.

Fender can often help directly too:

Have a great time here. :D
