PRS "winged" Locking tuners? How much do you want for them? I'll buy them from you IF you want to sell them! My eMail at 'Y' is like unto my nick here. It is a secondary one but I do check it every so often. Thanks.

(I'm planning on getting an SE single-cut Trem and I'd like to upgrade the tuners with the PRS Locking type if possible. I have serious doubts they'd be available on eBay at a reasonable price.)

yes, locking tuners do suck and i really don't think that they make a difference at all. Ok, perhaps after a month or so of not playing a guitar your E won't be a D but a E flat, but really... they suck.

That problem has got to be your un-stretched strings or the neck on your axe. From all my 44+ years as a guitarist, Locking tuners slippage is zero. String problems can result from how and where a guitar is stored between gigs. Certain brands of strings hold tune better as well. I use GHS Super-Steels and never had any problems, except acquiring them because few music stores in my area carry them. Certain brands of guitars hold tune because of better joints and more stable necks.

If you have a quality guitar with decent locking tuners AND good quality strings that you take the time to pre-stretch before you gig with them, any tuning problems should be eliminated.

My rhythm guitarist got a (neck-thru') Parker back in the early 90's and I'd usually tune it up for him before our gigs. I rarely ever had to touch anything from week to week, even in the winter.

String slippage with standard tuners is due to the extra windings around the string post. Locking tuners stop that problem dead. All 6 string changes with PRS or Grover Locking tuners (for me) lasts less than 10 minutes. Sure, it takes time to pre-stretch the strings and for the strings to set, but I always change them RIGHT AFTER a gig so that it allows plenty of time for the strings to settle before the next gig or practice. I 'yank' on them right after I first tune them all up and then re-tune. I'll wait a while (from a few hours to a day) and do it again. It isn't long before the strings maintain their tune. I also check them after a gig when I get home, (or the next day), especially if the strings are new. You have to allow for string stretch; there is no getting around it. Then again, I don't "whammy to spaghetti" nor bend the heck out of my strings either. Extra-Light gauge strings can also make a big difference. GHS .009 to .042 need more stretching than a set of 'tens'.

I'm not saying anyone here is like the fellow I'm about to describe, but maybe somebody believes locking tuners suck because if this problem:

I was told by a friend, who owns several guitars, (all with locking tuners), that he let his younger brother borrow one to take lessons on so that he could see if it was worth investing in his own electric axe. (The younger brother had an old, cheap acoustic he could barely manage to play.) After a few months, the owner gave his younger brother a new set of strings and told him that they probably needed changing. He managed to pop off the old strings (apparently didn't notice their length) and proceeded to insert the string part-way into the post-hole, then he wrapped the excess around the post the same as he'd done with his old acoustic. When the older brother got the guitar back and saw how the strings climbed up the tuning post, he laughed for days....... (The strings hadn't been stretched either......... no wonder the lockers didn't work, eh?) :P

Some people, apparently, have no clue. Even normally intelligent people can be ignorant in certain areas of what might be considered common knowledge, or in some cases known as common sense. (Even Einstein flunked High School math.) Here's a sample of what I mean:

Tourists ask a lot of questions as we travel between the Hawaiian Islands on my charter boat. Some people wanted to know, "Does the water go all the way around the island?" Another asked, "How much further until we're in the ocean?" But the one that made me want to jump overboard was, "Can you please take the boat closer to the sunset?"

For ease of stringing they are the best invention since the guitar.

I have locking tuners on all my guitars - YMMV
