The Esquire has only one pickup.

Telecaster has 2 pickups, and a three way switch to pick the bridge, neck, or both pickups.

Esquire, 1 pickup, and a three way switch, one position bypasses the tone knob and goes directly to the output (very twangy and trebly), the 2nd position goes through the tone knob like a regular Telecaster in the bridge pickup position, and the 3rd setting is where the signal goes through a capacitor instead of the tone knob, and sounds a bit darker than the other positions.

In brief:
Esquire: 1 pickup (Bridge) first production incarnation of what would become the Telecaster

Broadcaster: 2 pickups. Looks like a Telecaster.

Nocaster: post Gretsch lawsuit Broadcaster. They just trimmed Broadcaster off the headstock decals.

Telecaster: A renamed Broadcaster once they ran out of Broadcaster headstock decals

The utter simplicity of the Telecaster is what makes it so adaptable to all kinds of music, and the Nocaster is where it all started! From clean country licks to downright dirty blues. Harmonics that jump out so easily. Endless sustain with just an amp like a Vibrolux or Vibro-King.

A timeless instrument which will make you a better player if you let IT teach YOU!

Further to Mike above (prayers continue, Bro)...

...a Tele and you can play dang near anything. 'Have happily used the '00 AS for classical and jazz, too. Yup. And Caribbean. And Polynesian. And Greek and Christmas music.

If you have an extra silver shekl and a couple copper drachmas and iron rils...

... and REALLY wanna hear a Tele's versatility and likely get Tele-GAS, beat feet to your local music or book merchant and purchase Arlen Roth's "Masters Of The Telecaster" informative / music / tab / photos book with 2 CDs worth of pure Tele sounds. More than a hundred different ones. Farking amazing.

Repeat: Farking amazing.
