So I'm checking out instructional videos on YouTube the other day, and see this guy who looks like he didn't bother to take his strap out of it's package before attaching it to his guitar. Seriously, this guy could almost rest his chin on his pickups.

And I've also seen guys who wear their axes so low that a misdirected upstrum could seriously damage their chances for future fatherhood.

How about yourselves? What's a comfortable playing location? Chest? Waist? Somewhere inbetween?

Hello Jbond1013g,

Rarely is a strap ever
on any of my guitars as I,
99 times out of a 100,
am sitting.

But when I stand
the high E string is
about equal to my bellybutton

Cheers.

Somewhere inbetween - I play with the body just about my waist or a little higher - but I'm a big guy. I think that everyone should find out what's comfortable for them. Of course, some folk go for the style thing :P

Style over playability

The neck pickup for me should be just arounbd the height of the belt buckle. Having it too high is just not rock-n-roll.

The king of low was Jimmy Page. Have you ever lowered your git to where he played it? Impossible. Page in all respects defined the term "guitar hero".

Umm, I'd have to say just above my waist and below my chest....

I need to totally re-adjust my strap. My Strat runs about as low as my waistline, so that means its time to re-adjust the strap again. I really wouldn't mind it being about as high as my stomach though. Playability is everything. 8)

Same here. It's all about what allows me to play best without going through contortions. Keep in mind that you have to make adjustments for certain guitars (like ES-335 types, which are wider). I can't have my guitar in a position like Johnny Ramone (who was known for having his guitar low slung), or Billy J. Cramer (a '60's Brit Pop star, there's photos of him playing a hollowbody Gretsch practically under his chin-Google him!), it's just uncomfortable to me.

Depends on the guitar. But never too low or too high.

I have a bad left wrist, so comfort is most important to me. I have the guitar between my waist and chest.

I also do a lot of sitting, while playing too. It's just a nice lazy way of practicing. I usually only stand when playing with someone else.

I spent years flatpicking acoustic guitar which I tended to wear pretty high. With electric, I was never a low rider, tended to put my left wrist in what felt like an awkward position for the way I played.

I wear mine right about here.

If you're playing 2-3 note power chords in drop-D then you could get away with having your guitar hanging at your knees. If you are playing complex chord voicings (in jazz or classical for example) you would probably want your guitar relatively high. I think alot of guys might want to set it belly high to hide the results of all the free beer they're getting paid with instead of cash. ;)

I like it a little on the high side. I think it makes it adds some agility in both hands.

By the way:
