Okay, so I just kind of need to vent, and I want to know your guy's opinions on this, unfortunately, it doesn't have anything to do with music or guitars...

Okay, so a little background before the actual story:
I am trying very hard to not drink sodas, because I am doing sports and they are very detramental to sports activity...

Okay, so today at lunch, I got a free soda from where we get food at our school (not the cafeteria) because the lady who works there likes me and she accidentally got an extra one made (they are the kind in cups) so she just gave it to me. So at lunch in our commons area (where we eat our lunch) I am sitting at a table and tried to give the soda away, and no one wanted it... So I just stop thinking about the soda and forget all about it....
Well when the bell rang, I got up and left, oblivious to the fact that I just left the soda cup on the table. Well during my sixth hour class, a few of us from the table get called into the office... Well I go in to see our principal, and he starts rippin on me! The first thing he says to me is "WHO CLEANS UP AFTER YOU AT YOUR HOUSE?!?!?!" and I say "I do sir". Well throughout the whole ordeal, he has voiced raised and I am just answering "no sir" "yes sir" etc. I am trying to be as polite as humanly possible.... Well after all the raised voices and everything he tells me that I am going to have clean our commons area sometime soon or I will be kicked off the campus during lunches! This is the FIRST TIME I have EVER, EVER, left something on a table after lunch.

Well, I just want to know if you guys think this is a huge over reaction? I certainly do, but it happened to me so yea, I just want some outside opinions....

I always tell people what I think. It's not a good trait, but I feel good about it. I probably would've told him (emphasize told) "don't raise your voice!" and "This isn't my house!" and "I'm not your child!". I would've said that I made a mistake and I would straighten it out but I don't like being reprimanded. I usually get noticed. It never has caused me problems, not even as a Naval petty officer.

that is very cool, I wish I'd have had the gall to do that, but I was kinda freaking out and just defaulted to being really polite

First time or not, you left the crap on the table. Do what he says and don't whine about it. And for all you "I tell people what I think because I don't take crap from anyone" people, you are either not being truthful because no one knows you from Adam on the interweb or you will still be flipping my burger when you're 45.

There are times in life when things are unfair, or they just plain suck. What makes you a real grown-up is that you pick your battles and save it for times when there is something really important, or some real injustice to be faced.

Today, somewhere in the Sudan (or any other similar place), children were killed and women were raped because there is evil in the human heart. Now, which is more unfair - having your hands cut off so you can't fight, or getting yelled at by a middle-aged man that wants to burn the world because his ED meds don't work?

Here's the memo because you missed it: Life is unfair.

School teachers like that don't even see the students as human. Its happened to me and all my friends. Like this time in kindergarten, my friend, who is partly-deaf, was held back because why? The teacher set him next to a very noisy air conditioner ALL YEAR LONG, knowing he had this problem.

Or I can't forget the principal that said that the kids shouldn't be treated human, that they should be treated like dirt...I am quoting indirectly, of course...its been...shoot, 10 or 11 years since I've been that old.

But you know, those are just examples...it'd be nice if teachers and school workers could have a little more respect for the students. :x

The primary thing I learned from high school and college was how to survive in the adult world without killing any bureaucrats.

Think about it though, this job may be the pinnacle and crowning achievement of this man's (the principal) life. Maybe his wife tears into him when he gets home. Maybe his own kids disrespect him or his dog bit him this morning. Maybe this little bit of power is the only thing that gives him any self worth. Just be as patient as possible until you graduate and you'll never have to look at his face again.

Unfortunately there's plenty more donkeyholes where he came from.

That reminds me of a story. I was in the 4th grade or so, walking to school (a private catholic one). I leaped off the curb into a puddle as I was crossing the street. It seemed like fun. I must have accidentally splashed some water on the crossing guard's shoes and I didn't notice. Apparently he told the pricipal about it, and I was called to the office. Principal told me, and I quote, "when you spashed water on Whatshisname's shoes, you spalshed water on Jesus' shoes."

So I guess that means that you left your soda on Jesus' table? You should be ashamed!

I'll be 62 in November of '08 and I can relate even though it's been some 44 years since I was in HS. Believe me, that won't be the only time such BS will happen to you. There are a ton of Napoleon wanna-be's out there who get off on picking a 'Bone-a-part'. Just look what happened when they 'lowered' the height restriction for police: Every under six-foot power-hungry jerk got a uniform, a badge, a gun and a HUGE attitude. There are too many people in positions of power who are seriously under-qualified because they abuse their authority, no matter whether they are elected, appointed or other-wise under the wing of some upper authority, such as commonly seen in nepotism. (Daddy pulled strings to get them the job and I'm not beating around the BUSH for an example here!) Teachers have a job security blanket called 'tenure' that allows them to feel safe from getting fired just because they are doing a crappy job, taking their frustrations out on others or making mountains out of the proverbial mole hills. Remember this: The History of the world and the course of the human race is loaded with directives from leaders who were (or ARE) total moronic idiots &/or blood-thirsty sick-o deviants. Your Principle took a bite out of your butt: You can laugh when you think about what he's chewing on!!!! You think you got sh*t? HE swallowed it!!! He made a total AH out of himself over a free soda that you left behind due to your own honorable 'principals'. NEVER let lesser people drag you down to their level. He's just a snag on a twig in your venture down the stream of life. We must learn to rise above such ridiculous garbage and 'over-look' other people's deficiencies. Apparently someone made an issue out of removing the cup, didn't look to see if it was empty or not and THEY made a mess, consequently complaining to your Principle and he HAD to be a jerk and make a bigger issue out of it, just to convince himself HE was doing his job. I remember my HS days when they made a stink out of 'spit-balls'. Now they have to deal with knives, drugs and guns. I look back and see how childish they were. Someday, when you can appreciate the stupidity of it, you can have a good chuckle reading his obituary.

This is training for the many jerks you will meet in life. It gets worse, especially if you have occasion to deal with criminals or dangerous manipulators. Just keep your cool, stay aware of the situation, and keep your own best interests in mind.

By the way, I don't think it's a huge over reaction. It's important to you, and you've got the good sense to understand that this is a situation worth learning more about.

+1 Imagine if we could get away with anything, just 'cause it's the "first time". There's a sweet Astom Martin in my neighborhood that I'd like to take for a joy ride... just once. 8)

Rscornutt, you are there.

Frankly, this is the last place I'd ask for advice on this matter.

If it bothers you that much, tell the story you told us to your parents. Let them know that it was the first time you'd left something behind and you feel the principal was out of line with his reaction. Threatening a kid with throwing him off campus is a serious matter.... one that parents need to be involved in. They can decide if it's worth making an issue out of it or not.

Well said thats what I always told my son and even my guys that worked for me. You have a problem with someone you dont get upset and say anything. You come to me and let me fight the fight as the parent in my Sons case and the Boss for my guys. My son had problem with a teacher a few years ago and when I went to the school to meet him I understood why. The man should not have been in a classroom and I told him as such by the end of our meeting. Then informed the Office Aministration as well and had my son move to another class only to find that there had been three other students moved from his class. Needless to say he did not return to the school the next year.
