Greetings all. Haven't posted in a long while. So here's an awkward question. :)

Okay, here we go... and I want you to imagine this being spoken in the gruffest, manliest voice audible to the human ear.... Anyone have acrylic nails on your picking hand (girls too)?

I cannot grow nails (major biter, you see), besides which, when I'm not finger pickin' my strumming style's pretty crazy, which, with natural nails, would end in blood and tears....

But reading somewhere online recently that John Butler's mammoth talons are in fact of the artificial variety brought me solace and led me to google "acrylic nails guitar". Turns out there's a whole whack of musicians, pro and hobbyist, sporting such ungual deceptions.

Dudes.... It's not the thought of dipping into the salon every few weeks that freaks me out. It's the thought of that first visit.... Because, like most men, I need to know what I'm there for, get in and get out. I don't want to discuss my options with Susan, the Nail Tech, while sipping on a latte, realising that the only reading material in the place is Vanity Fair. No. I want to walk in there with specs, measurements, blueprints and an estimated budget at the ready before Susan's receptionist even gets off her chair (... or his chair... whatever... I'm a Millenial Man).

Oh, I could roll with this one for hours, but let me not. I'm in the need to know, people. How long do they generally go before a fill-in is required? Are they really stronger than real nails? How much does it generally set one back per nail? Are there any health risks?

Let me know, guys. Ladies and Gentlemen, The Stone needs you.

:D

I was under the assumption that you could buy acrylic nails at Wal-Mart? No?

I paint mine black if I'm going to be doing a lot of finger-picking. It helps to strengthen them, and also gives that Bad-A image. Although, admittedly, I'm not a biter. (Of nails  )

Bwaaaa Ha Ha!! Yes, that's exactly what's been concerning me!
Imagine the awkward glances on a first date before you get on to the subject of being a guitarist.
I can see myself insisting to my brothers "they're purely functional! They're purely functional!!!", while they hang their heads in shame.

hahaha i'm finding this rather ammusing!! Personally, i've had a bad habbit of biting my nails for a while and jsut can't seem to stop for a while cause they end up chipping and I then bite them off anyway...what's the point? And I find it works best with me for playing cause if they're too long they just get in the way...I do find it a lot of fun to paint them in random bright flashy colors! haha I find the natural look works best for me!! never really tried acrylic nails...don't think it would be a health hazzard or anything tho. Just a blow to your pride maybe, being a guy...lol idk...

Man card's aside ask a female friend to help. I don't have a problem with chewing my nails any more but my oldest daughter when she was younger used to put nail hardener on her nails.

I read a recent interview in Guitar Player magazine with a major artist (sorry, can't remember who). They discussed acrylic nails and how they are superior to the natural nail for guitar work. Personally, I see nothing wrong with it, so why affect any histrionics about manliness? If it helps, keep in mind that Dwight Eisenhower (about as manly as you can get) used to use clear nail polish on his nails.

Personal opinion, covering them up with fakes means your nails are not getting air exchange and you are absorbing glue into your system. Not good health-wise, either way. 'Have heard of classical players who use them getting nail fungus, no joy and some medical expense.

Thought...stop biting, use ick-taste liquid like drugstores sell for kids, try some finger picks. And biting damages teeth.

Best of fortune.

If only it were that simple. I'm a chronic nail biter myself, and I've tried every kind of application they make. After a couple of days, I go right ahead and bite them, no matter how nasty the stuff tastes. I'm ashamed of it, but it's just part of who I am.

On the plus-side, the nails on my left hand don't interfere with my fretting. :P

I went through this phase where I would write stuff on my fingernails (mostly obscenities) with a Sharpie and then cover it with a clear coat so they would stay longer. It never worked that well and as a result I stopped.

I do a MANicure on my nails on a weekly basis. I also use a Satin finish nail hardener.

OK...probably a dumb question....but why not just buy those finger picks. The kind that you put on your fingers? And......your manhood is still intact.

i use them when on vacation...so they dont see me wearing them at work...but they help alot, and it sux when yu remove them and try to play without them. Tommy Emmanuel says he developed tough finger tips that
work very well for him. i too, have a finger nail breaking issue.
Plus, one hand looks like dracula hand and the other is cut so short i look like i have a nervous problem.ha!...no remedies here, just agreeing with the situation
