Excuse my ignorance guys. But, can I plug my guitar into an amp head and get a sound?
I tried this yesterday on a Marshall 6100 head but I couldn't get any sound out of it? Does it need to be plugged into a speaker cabinet to sound?
Thanks.

Also...

It's important that the speaker cabinet's load impedance is within the specification rating for your amp or you can mess up your amp. Impedance is measured in Ohms. Do a google search for "guitar amp impedance" and you should find some good info.

Amp heads being used with a instrument being plugged in, but without a speaker load, are not a good thing. That usually results in a bad thing, and a expensive repair job. If all else fails, read the instructions, preferably BEFORE plugging in.
