Eh, I'm a teen (17), but I don't really feel the need to be a rebel. I don't really see the point to drinking and such like most kids my age are doing. If I rebel against anything, it's probably just the pop image everyone tries so desperately to adhere to. I'll dress casual, but I refuse to buy anything expensive from Hollister and such.

Then there is hope for the world yet. Looking like a freak is NOT a preferred way of expressing your individuality. In fact I suggest that freakish "body art" is now nothing more than trying to "fit in" and "conform".

Hippies destroyed our Country.

Pre Summer of Love:
U.S. is a major world power with a strong economic and education system. Inflation is low, productivity is high, taxes are low, people are proud to be American.

Post Summer of Love:
U.S. ecomomy weakens, suddenly the idea that the Government should take care of us rears it's ugly head, moral ambivalence increases, U.S. currency is taken off the gold standard and inflation goes up. Taxes are increased to pay for "social programs", the middle class begins to shrink.

No one is entitled to more than birth and death. Anything beyond that it is gravy and you are responsible for getting it.

Yes, I blame "Hippies" for the decline of Westen Civilization

Interesting point of view considering that, the generation of whom you speak I am personally familiar with. I can bear witness to the fact that they themselves, in a good part, have gone from the far left, to the far right, as every bit as conservative as those against whom they rioted in Chicago in 1968.

They have become their fathers and mothers, ie. the more things change, the more they remain the same.

That's certainly true of many I've maintained contact with since the 60s. I was more or less the token moderate conservative of the bunch.

My politics are still roughly the same as they were 40 years ago but boy have most of my friends done the pendulum thing. From hippie to arch conservative, most went on to high level business positions and now take a very hard line stance on everything from morals to welfare.

Most have gone from saying "Hell NO, I won't go" 40 years ago to saying "Hell YES, your kid's going ... 'cause I'm not going to see my retirement portfolio sink in some sand dune" today.

Ironic: my best friend was a bona fide hippie back in the day. He migrated out to Berkeley for a while, hair down to the waist, protests, the whole nine yards. He went from that to eventually becoming a senior exec with one of the world's largest oil companies. Even he saw the irony in at one time managing a division that he'd years before picketed as a protester. (And the division still made the same items he'd once tried to have banned but now was responsible for selling.)
