I have a fantasy about one day tearing down my garage and building a new one complete with an 'ax cave' so I could jam to my heart's content without disturbing the wife and the neighbors. Big enough to hold all my gear, a drum set for weekend jams with friends, plenty of room for a bass player and a singer, etc. So, how would you guys build it, from the ground up? How would you outfit it: Fridge, of course... carpet? Carpet on the walls to soundproof? Built in benches around the sides? Or maybe room for a couch or two?

Insulation, lots of it, plus the carpeting. That'll be soo cool to have. Good luck with the fantasy becoming a real project my friend. :D

I've been lucky in that regard. I have a house with a large living room, called a "great room". All open space with no walls. When I've played with people, I've had plenty of room. No need for storage with me, since all I need is a guitar, amp, and a few pedals. I've had a drummer over.....but...when we're done playing.....he gets to pack up his drums and take them home afterwards. Also.....the house is located in the middle of nowhere, so no real worry about noise.

In order to make is sound proof, you need to make an "air barrier". This is a space of air between the inside wall and the outside wall. You can do this by using 2x6's for the framing and alternating the studs in the frame from front to back. Then you can use further dampening of the sound methods like foam or carpet. Musician's Friend has all kinds of sound dampening stuff for home studios.

Cool idea.

'Had a music room in house before this one and it was really a hip thing to have.

"Ax cave" has a slick ring to it.

I just think it would be great to have my own space with my full rig set up, a drum set already set up, etc. So I could then call my friends and say "Come over to jam. Just bring sticks and picks. and beer." I now play in our home office area but need to break out my stuff and put it away each time.

that would awesome. my friend is a drummer, and he has a room in his basement set up just for jamming, insulated and all. It's pretty nice to hang over at his house.

I've always wanted to convert a room in my house to be a recording studio/jamming room. But unfortunately, I don't have any empty rooms in my house and I don't want to get an addition to my house.

My wife and I are moving soon. The house has four bedrooms, but there are only two of us. That means that the second-largest bedroom is going to become my music & computer room. I've already bought my first piece of decor: the vaguely Soviet-looking Fender Axis sign (on the left):

If fits in nicely with all my Russian paraphernalia.

My brother (Redmax61 on here) has a studio built in his garage.

I would like to just make a whole corner for the drummer (with a noise barrier), and the rest of the place big enough for the other members of the band. And replace the walls with steel or something so the neighbors won't breathe down my neck. 8)
