I'm an engineer (and look like one), but music doesn't really have anything to do with what something looks like.

I am in my late 40's and I cut my ponytail off last year now. I just keep my hair like over my ears put (got2b) in it sometimes to scruff it up and I change the color from time to time. Pierced ear nine tattoo's always wear low rise jeans and like nice screen print T-Shirts. I even go to Church every Sunday dressed as such so I would say I am normal.

I dress normally. You don't need to fit a stereotype to play the guitar.

Long hair, loose clothes, jeans or velvet pants, t-shirts, groovy shirts(love that 70's cut), hoodies and sunglasses in all weather, guess I'm very stereotype :P
I'm on the lookout for some suits with a British cut for finer occasions, which is a bit stereotype as well(imagine George Harrison, Eric Clapton or the Band in the 70's)

And I have my guitar with me pretty much everywhere I go

I've never had a problem with people being surprised that I look "normal", after finding out that I play guitar. Not only that, but most of the people I've played music with, also look normal. Maybe it's just depends on the style of music one is playing. I would imagine punk style music or heavy metal would somewhat require you to dress to play the part.

Most people only think that it's interesting I play a guitar, and are not surprised at all with my dress. With all the pics I've seen posted in this forum of members, most seem like "ordinary" people to me. In fact.....I see many people with tattoos, piercings, etc, who have nothing at all do do with guitars.

Hopefully, this topic won't make me feel guilty and cause me to go out and get nipple rings...........

People are always shocked that I play guitar because I'm a suit/tie business type. That doesn't bother me. What does bug me is that people assume that I play music somewhere in the middle of hard rock to extreme metal. I primarily play country, jazz, and lighter stuff.

I think if you gig you should play the part. You know, invent an alter ego.

Thankfully, I don't play live anymore.

Boringly normal apperance and new-meet people are oft surpised about the electric guitar playing part of life for some decades...also play electric bass weekly at church.

'Do not have interest in or wish to make efforts to do appropriate 'affectations' to look the part of a societally-stereotypic electric guitar player.

From this point of view, 'the elcetric guitarist' is in one's soul and hands, not hair, duds, piercings and tats.

this is like when I tell people I like Star Trek, they expect me to be a loser who sits in a dark basement all day playing D&D whose best friend is his mother, I dress like a normal person (T-shirts [almost all of which are USC Gamecocks, Fender, or element...] jeans and Vans shoes) and act like a normal person. It's like sexism... I think I've heard it called Hobbyism...

but I've never heard of someone thinking all people who play guitar are freaks...

Eh, in the school I go to, you either play one or the other - Acoustic or electric. The acoustic "guitarists" are more or less the "preppy" kids who think they're all that (they really do have big egos...)

And the electric guitarists are usually the opposite. Although we're not otherworldly looking. I just throw on a T-shirt and jeans and thats it. No eyeliner, no dyed hair, no piercings, no nothing.

I think it more or less comes down to school-society rather than ACTUAL society IMO. :?
