Somehow when I tell people I play electric guitar they seem surprised that I don't have a facial tattoo and I don't wear baggy studded leather pants and a torn tank top. I'm really quite normal looking and tend to wear dress trousers and pressed shirts in public.

Is there a dress code for people who play electric guitar?

That is the problem with society(okay, gonna get philosophical here, stay with me). It seems that preconceived notions dominate our rationale. We tend to take for gospel what is fed to us through the myriads of media streams that we allow to invade our psyche every day. It is a form of brainwashing if you will.

We associate rock guitarists as spiky haired, tattooed, dark eyeliner wearing miscreants. And the "politically correct" sycophants of this world demand that we accept everything that is out there as normal.

So, now that my tirade of ranting is winding down. Lets just sum up a bit with a few short words.

Normal is relative and subject to conjecture. Yes, I look normal. And so does everyone else in the world. Except for Tommy Lee, he is just a freak! :D

I am not good looking enough to play a strat... :D

But my soul can!!

Yes it's true, people are scared of not accepting what they have been told. But we're above them aren't we?

if anyone is least judgemental, it will be musicians. They accept everyone for who they are and let them express themselves, because that's what we do.

I've been asked more than a few times while trying out a bass to join bands. I usually try out basses with a myriad of scales, chords, and feel the bass by slapping. When I tell them I'm not interested in joining a funk band, they say why, I tell them I like to play NYHC. Then usually I get the reply, why do you need to know the stuff you do if you're going to play 3 notes on the bass?! Then I just politely tell them to leave me alone, cuz I didn' t know that having knowledge to play the instrument I love mean I can't play simple music that I also love. I guess that's the stereotype of it though, you can only play hardcore if you can only play 3 notes to the song. :(

PS. None of my tattoos are below my elbows, and the chest and back are always covered with my shirt. So I guess I look normal enough, other than my shaved head.

I guess I'm normal looking. When I tell people I play guitar they're a bit surprised because in the office I'm kind of quiet and conservative.

I'm reminded of a conversation I had years ago with my then teenaged daughter who would wear what I thought were some strange outfits to school. The topic of discussion: What is normal?

I agree with the stipulation that some performer propagate the stereo Type. People believe what they see and they see what the media and promoters show them. We see only a minority of the people who play guitar, the majority of us are not on T.V. and stage.

I think i'm pretty normal...although ocationally I get the tips of my hair dyed purple...but this time I think it'll be red. Anyway, that's as far as I've gone, but I think it's certainly true that guitarist have that steriotype of having that "look."

Yeah, but a lot of women have their hair tips colored nowadays. I'm still trying to figure out the look that people are suppose to have when they play an istrument or being in a rock band.

Well one clue would be if they are wearing a Fender Lounge Forum t-shirt! 8)

To add, I guess that's why "Rock Stars" have costume designer to dress them. They have to look a certain way right? I bet these young rockstars have clothing designers, like Pete Wentz, the Jonas Bros, all these guys tend to dress a like :?

I have always been asked if I play music... I finally gave up on trying to explain my "look", and started playing this year. Now I can say, "yeah, I play." LoL

So I guess I look like a "normal musician" (whatever that means)

I "look" like I just got out of the Marines, except I'm dressing more casual now. In high school, I was known as "that guitar kid" cause guitar or bass, if you needed someone to play in your band for a one night thing, you came to me.

Now, I dress how I need to dress during the week for business (I'm the manager of a local store) and on Friday and Saturday nights, I dress for show. Normally torn up jeans, a black t-shirt and a studded belt. I'm assuming because I play guitar, that's how people want me to dress all the time?

Funny you mention it because I was booted from the last group I was in because I didn't have the look, and refused to wear stuff that would make me look like Zyggy Stardust. Oh well, I guess rock and roll has a style, it's just a shame that it can overshadow the actual music.
