Cool pix guys, hey Ceri I have a pic of me and the very same rock you're standing next to at Avebury  A friend has invited me to a trip to Doune Castle soon, another pic opportunity for me, with a Monty Python theme

Now THAT opens the door to interesting possibilities :!: :P

Doc

Yes indeed! (Anything to get this thread away from the unfortunate direction I unwittingly took it... ).

Snowy, remember to take your coconut halves with you!

BTW: on the Python thing, my wife and I were recently dining out and sitting at the table right behind me were Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam and Phill Jupitus (who I guess Americans may not know: he's very much in the same mould). I thought to myself, wow, there must be fun stuff flying around at that tableful of comic genius!

Now I didn't eavesdrop, ladies and gentlemen, but I couldn't help hearing bits of conversation that drifted across... And as far as I could tell, the entire evening was spent discussing the wording of contracts, lawyers charges, agents' percentages, which production company owes who how much - yadda yadda. About as un-Pythonesque as you could possibly imagine! What a let down...

Cheers - C

(PS Yes, Triskele, most of those pics are Stonehenge. :) )

Apology unnecessary Captain Neela. The doing was half-wittingly all mine.

In the matter of the conversation overheard....Do not forget that the name of their stock in trade is showBUSINESS. Intellectual properties issues are major major concerns for artists in today's vast multimedia circus. e.g. the re-run circuit of major TV series of long past...in the States....' I Love Lucy', 'The Honeymooners', 'Seinfeld', 'Friends" just for one type of media.
One could go on forever.

Far simpler to find one's way into the English countryside and wind up in frenzy among one's mates. :P

Wow, that building is still there? It should be protected as a historical monument! Is that a toy pig hanging off your finger or is that superimposed?

Hi Museseek: matter of fact it is protected. In the 1980s developers got half way through tearing Battersea Power Station down, which is why you can see sunlight through it. Then a preservation order was slapped on it and it has stood there ever since waiting for someone to dream up a use for it.

It sits in the middle of about 35 acres of waste land which is a rare thing these days in the middle of any city. In my pic you can glimpse some new appartment buildings to the right of the power station: I'm told those are currently going for £3m/$4.5m per unit - and they're not particularly spacious.

If someone can find a use for the power station then the rest of the land will mint them gazillions: over the last 25 years the site's been owned by developers, banks, Kuwait, the Irish - and no one's done anything with it yet. A dedicated rock and roll arena was one plan I liked...

A side note: the American Embassy is shortly to move from it's famous location in Grovesnor Square in London's expensive Mayfair to a site next door to Battersea Power Station, on what is currently an industrial estate. Weird.

***

I cut that pig out of card and hung it on cotton from my finger. Get a life, Ceri!

Cheers - C

I always think this Ceri - Imagine if, someone managed to clear up all the health and safety forms, and the red tape, and there was a concert there. If I've ever got the power to, that's something I'd like to achieve. Who knows!!!

Go to: www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com/bigmap/quee ... /index.htm. Click on Cultural Detritus and scroll down to Schwartz Chemical Company Long Island City.

You will find the NYC version of Battersea and what eventually came of it. First a power station for the Pennsylvania Railroad originating in 1909, later an industrial building in the 1950', it rises from the ashes like the phoenix.

If you google Schwartz Chemical Company, Long Island City you will find other links to this landmark structure. It's current fate has not been entirely well received by popular culture. However, given the regentrification of the community, I am not at all surprised at the project.

I had no idea of the project until last week when I saw a real estate ad for apartments in a building called "Powerstation". From the address, I knew it could have only been the 'Schwartz".

"May The Schwartz Be With You"

Hi Doc: hey, but they lost the chimneys! I'd only want one of those apartments on the understanding I had a private elevator up one of the chimneys to my own personal viewing deck / cocktail lounge. No chimney: no dice, I'm afraid.

Shame: I was nearly there...

Cheers - C

PS: Echo_Delta, the most recent plans I saw for Battesea included yet another version of the concert venue scheme, though on a smaller scale (more apartments: less auditorium). But with the current property market we shouldn't hold our breathe...

Hi Doc: hey, but they lost the chimneys!

If you surf through some of the other links on google you'll find that there was quite a bit of sympathy for not losing those chimneys. This aging industrial art had the same emotional appeal as Battersea, and when you first posted that photo, the Schwartz building was my first thought. .

The seond level served as tennis courts for awhile among all that glorious piping and rigging. I was down there once, about 25 years ago, on my way to a popular but now gone restaurant. Looking at all that hardware through those tall shattered windows was quite fascinating.

Those old 'dinosaurs' had a magic all their own.
