Anyone recognise this derelict power station? What's that in the sky?

This one obviously didn't work compositionally, but my wife felt you'd like the sunset through the ruins lighting...

Wow, that building is still there? It should be protected as a historical monument! Is that a toy pig hanging off your finger or is that superimposed?

Hi Museseek: matter of fact it is protected. In the 1980s developers got half way through tearing Battersea Power Station down, which is why you can see sunlight through it. Then a preservation order was slapped on it and it has stood there ever since waiting for someone to dream up a use for it.

It sits in the middle of about 35 acres of waste land which is a rare thing these days in the middle of any city. In my pic you can glimpse some new appartment buildings to the right of the power station: I'm told those are currently going for £3m/$4.5m per unit - and they're not particularly spacious.

If someone can find a use for the power station then the rest of the land will mint them gazillions: over the last 25 years the site's been owned by developers, banks, Kuwait, the Irish - and no one's done anything with it yet. A dedicated rock and roll arena was one plan I liked...

A side note: the American Embassy is shortly to move from it's famous location in Grovesnor Square in London's expensive Mayfair to a site next door to Battersea Power Station, on what is currently an industrial estate. Weird.

***

I cut that pig out of card and hung it on cotton from my finger. Get a life, Ceri!

Cheers - C

Thanks for that interesting update! I'm glad to hear that the structure is protected. And I was wondering about the sunlight shining through it. It's too bad that that greedy developers managed to destroy half of it.

What to do with it? Man, if they could turn it into a national museum of British music that would be highly appropriate and would definitely be an attraction I'd want to visit. A large music arena would also be appropriate because of its size. Both could be done, along with some restaurant and small theater uses for added revenue.

I think that it should be in the hands of the British government.

The pig cutout is quite effective and well done.

Floyd's Animals album may be my favorite album of all time so I really enjoy your photos. I've never seen the actual building and didn't realize that it was a power plant. I always assumed that it was some kind of massive meat processing plant because of its association with the album.

New, upscale develpment near the plant is an encouraging sign. I just hope that the government keeps the protected status in place while making wise utilization of the structure.

So many of us Americans are such big Pink Floyd fans that I could see officials in our government intentionally placing the embassy next door to the plant. LOL

OK, here's another '70s album cover for yer.

This street has changed a lot in the last 35 years, so you'll need to look carefully.

No? Need a clue? Howzabout; women are from Venus, spiders are from Mars...

I needed the clue, I'm sorry to say. The building in the background looks pretty much the same.

Thanks. Keep them pics coming!

And congrats Ceri on hitting the 2000 post level!

Yes; what was once a grotty back street is now part of business suited restaurant/bar land. Though anyone setting tables and chairs outside in London in December is placing hope over experience...

Still, you didn't need my next clue, which was going to be...:

One of my esteemed colleagues took me back to the last day of Pompeii in one of those things. I've always had an interest in that event and he was only too anxious to please. Needless to say we just managed to get out of there with our skins intact. It made great "What I did on my summer vacation fodder: August 24th 1979 to August 24th 79 and return.

Hehe!

...Though I presume you've seen the back of the Ziggy Stardust album?

According to my source (a book called "London's Rock and Roll Landmarks") that telephone box is a replacement for the original. British Telecom took it away - and then had to put another back due to public demand. Also, it has been moved a few feet to one side to make way for a restuarant door.

So it's the wrong box in not quite the right position. But hey, I tried...!

Ah, now that's unkind. Let's face it, I fail in a direct comparison with Bowie in so many ways!  Not least the absence of the turquoise cat suit...

Apparently, that K West sign was still there till quite recently. Gone now, though, far as I noticed...

Cheers - C
