I just recently got a band together, the only thing we're missing is a keyboardist, and then we'll have a complete band. We've decided on "Joker and the Thief" by Wolfmother, I hope by the time the senior high talent show rolls round that I can post a vid of it. :D

But me and the band plan to make it a stunning performance. Had a little talk with the vocalist, and we've decided to actually dress in costume for the song. He enters as a feeble old man, barely making his way across the stage on a wooden cane, and he comes up to the mike and says "...I once heard a story...about the joker...and the thief...let me share this story with all of you..."

Thats where the band enters, in which we'll be dressed as jokers and thieves. When the "old man" starts singing, he'll immediately toss the cane across the stage and he'll literally pick up the mike stand and start going rockstar on it. Not only that, me and the other guitarist will actually be swapping parts of the song, including choruses/verses/and solos.

So give me your opinions on this. I'm pretty psyched so I didn't think I'd hold it back. Ah and any advice for governing the band's activity would be nice to, since I hear there are many veteran musicians on the Fender Lounge Forums. :D

In my experience, putting on a show on stage, just to be putting on a show on stage, makes it look....well.....staged.

If you're going to get into the music, by all means get into the music, and grind, jump, sway, shake your hips.....whatever the music tells you to do.

But putting on an act just makes it look cheap.

wow i know im gonna play at my schools talent show but ive got 2 ideas.

1.i start playing a random song and see if i get a response then break into "Another Brick in The Wall p.2" and have a teacher come onstage with a mic yelling "How are you gonna eat your pudding if you havent ate your meat".

2. do a spoof of The Who with me as Pete play "Teenage Wastleland" but change the lyrics instead of "Its only teenage wastleland" and make it "America is a TeenAge wastleland" and destroy a Rock Band or Guitar Hero controller onstage.

If that is your vision, then go with it.
Remember the two fundamental rules of performing:

Rule number 1: Don't suck
Rule number 2: Don't break rule number 1

That all depends on how the talent contest is scored, and how much they want to play the game, or how much this idea is really them.

Personally it's not something I'd have ever been into, but that's me--some people get into that sort of stuff.

The main things I'd say about showmanship are 1-it is important.
2-make sure it's you, and not showmanship for the sake of it self.

If that fits with your idea--go for it, if it doesn't--then at least tweak the idea.

My ideas in high school usually involved a light show of some sort. Usually simple ideas like dark, then sudden light, then changing that around, and maybe strobe lights and what not. It would probably look quite dated today--but would have woowed them back in high school.

Nobody gets rated for anything, and the basic idea is "everybody wins." Which quite frankly, I think thats just fine. I'm not really worried about blowing away competition as much as just putting on a show. :D

(Mainly because last year was a disaster).

Go for it anyway--if you really want to.

Like I said--I wouldn't but it's not me in your band.

I think if something was rehersed but was meant to look natural, well that's one thing, but if it's something like this and you think it all comes together well then go for it!

I think if you are going to put on a show then do it. I'd look at it more like a stage act and if you can reherse it and make it look good and natural you should absolutely do it. Good luck and I cant wait for the video.

Before you do this, I'd recommend you sit down and watch This Is Spinal Tap.

"Stonehenge. Best production value ever."

IMO, it would make more sense to get the music tight before you go about getting any stage show together. The music should always come 1st.

Thats why we're starting to practice NOW instead of right when the show is. The show won't be until probably March or April, but hey, like my friendly local music dealer once said - "If you practice for months, success will surely come your way every time."

Or something like that.

In the early 70's Genesis was very theatrical

Yes, their fame increased when Peter left and they gave up the makeup, but it created enough buzz to propel the remaining members into mainstream fame. I say go ahead, have fun with it. People will remember your performance. That's always a good thing. One thing to remember though, your frontman needs to be very charismatic.
