Does anybody have any experience buying and selling rosewood fretboard guitars made before the CITES restriction across national borders? I live in Norway and I’ve been warned about buying used guitars with rosewood from the US as the bureaucracy is very fiddly and complex. As I understand: both seller and buyer have to apply for a special permit to deal in an endangered species, and private sellers and small stores are likely to lack the experience with the bureaucracy so that mistakes are likely to happen.

Eljay:

While it is true that USA has their import/export rules and regulations some is very straight forward. Living on the border here in Canada we are very used to import and export regulations with our American neighbours. We also know that everything is subject to change.

Here in Canada most of our rules and regulations mirror that of the U.S. Generally, we change they change and vice versa. As always there are exceptions, and each has cross border differences.

For the most part we can contact our local authorities for clarification and/or updates which can be cloudy or iffy were they to just come from other resources.

My first choice would be to go that route as your local authorities should be able to pass on or find a suitable source for that clarification.for both USA and Norway especially since trade laws are in effect.

Then, if that satisfaction is made, you can go another step to find out from U.S. Customs if that is of help.

Note: Here we can enlist the help of brokers for some things, but our brokers are licensed, unfortunately, in Europe they are not required to be. So buyer beware.

Perhaps, this is of use to answer your question, Eljay:
