I was on the phone with a couple of Apple support techs yesterday. The topic was iTunes and iCloud. Seems like no one was keen on talking about a replacement for iTunes yet. Just over a year ago Apple had said that employees leaking info of any kind will be prosecuted, so I guess that qualifies for at least some details at this moment. Although, as I’ve experienced, “Aren’t the employees often the last to know?”

Very true it seems, FSB. I've cleaned out my iTuntes library and have everything saved on an external
hard drive. Also, since I have a few bucks in my Apple acct, I subscribed to the 99 cents a month deal
to get extra iCloud storage.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201058

It gives me 50 gigs and I can cancel anytime.

Backup storage duplicated elsewhere is a great idea, Mike. iCloud certainly has it’s share of hacking and gremlins; but, that’s child’s play compared to the big boys with the big toys.

I heard a story that one of the big PC players has/or had their computers come to the States from offshore, they then arrive at a warehouse on the coast, the computers are then quietly rigged to later discretely pass data to the authorities before and after the manufacturer distributes them to the store to sell to the unsuspecting buyer, all in the name of National security which is why they don’t do this offshore.
If that’s true, perhaps, it’s is done for or at other manufacturers.

Think of it this way. With concern for other nations taking an unwarranted peek, it’s makes sense our own could take the same advantage for their perusal,

Doesn’t matter, we’ve all disregarded EULAs and checked that agreement box at one time or another and another and another.
Besides, any and all online backups have questionable transparency, legalities, ownership of personal data, and distribution known and unknown. :P
That’s called progress.

I have to admit the pricing is reasonable. I guess you have a fairly large collection. For smaller backups, just sign up for a Gmail account. You get 15GB of Google Drive storage - free. And yeah you could sign up for 4 accounts to get a total of 60GB free storage but who wants to manage 4 accounts? $1/month is worth it in that case IMO.

Online storage is really handy for sure. It’s a danged if you do and danged if you don’t.

Cloud services no matter the name can very often include several international server backups for your data should something go ascrew. That’s good. On the other hand, sensitive material can be, but not always, at easier risk when that data is available for breaching from a multitude of sites.

Recently, this major financial breach occurred In Canada:

The Cloud and technology was not in question here; but, poorly executed safe practice and human contact was.

Basically, if it’s not in your hand, it’s out of your hands. Hard copy still has an advantage.
Mind you, others’ computers are an advantage for tracking, documenting, and correcting the breaches.
What you have in your hand decides if you win the game or not, Decisions, decisions.

I miss the original owner’s included storage my cable company had for personal data, photos, and video, etc. My PC was already in their ball court, with no need to distribute my info a second or third or . . . time. They might have done that for me, but the fact their service was dropped makes me doubtful. Simple and no other agreements were attached. That was a common thing for providers, and a few have held on to that. Today, it has become something else. Yep! It sure has. Phtt!

I wouldn’t worry about what online storage choice to make though, unless it’s an ownership problem which can end up being a complicated court issue in the long run. Might as well have that convenience and fun. Pandora’s box was opened by early adopters looking for a quick fix. It’s too bad me too and when do I want it (?) . . . I want it now eager beavers jumped the gun before caution established more sensible rules and before it got this far. We could have had it all. Instead we’re handed a nice looking package and thrown a bone. Again, it doesn’t matter much. If you haven’t already given away the farm, the corporate farmers will be knocking on your door and mine in time to harvest the rest. Then we’ll all breaking new ground.

Aw, fuggedaboutit. I’m still looking for a storage site for photos and video that works to my liking. I’m close to that decision, but not in love with any at the moment. They and me will probably just remain friends at a distance.

Just sayin’.

FSB

Note: I’d love it if we could send a decent, but not an outrageous, amount of video by email without having to use a secondary unrelated method. Now that’s convenience.

Mr Google here again.
Well, Gmail kinda does that now.

The old way was: you attach a video and get an error message that you can only send 25mb (way back when). Click OK and wish you could send your file.

The new way is: you attach a video and Google reads the file size. If it exceeds the maximum to send as an attachment, the file is saved to Google Drive and shared automatically, and a link to the shared video is placed in the email instead. The recipient of the email simply clicks the link to view the shared video, which is now hosted in your Google Drive. It all happens pretty seamlessly.

Thanks, Ghost. That’s pretty slick. :D

Mega.nz gives you 500 gigs free. Here's a rare Clapton compilation
that I have stored on there. I have about 25 compilations stored there.

I've been storing rare bootlegs there since 2014 and still have over 38 gigs!

Looks interesting, Mike. Thanks for the link. No small storage at unlimited size with the 50 gigs free as promoted with the link, not 500 GIgs. 50 gigs is still nothing to sneeze at so thanks. Appreciated

Gotta love that, Mike. I can relate with a couple of 500 Gig hard drives. The best deal I ever made was a limited availability lifetime membership for Sirius/XM. Not that it didn’t cost me with Canadian prices before it was free every year.
