I admit I laughed a little bit when I read "Microsoft is sick of you not upgrading".
They can be sick all they want.
Apple can too, for all I care.
I won't update an OS just because there's an update available.
If the old OS is working and it's doing what I need it to then I see no need to update.
I have zero interest in learning what's new with the new update.
I have a very strong desire to resist having to learn a new interface.
I hate trying to do something and not being able to find it because they removed that feature, renamed it, moved it to some other menu location or whatever.
If there is some bug or some security threat then by all means fix it BUT if they take the bug-fix as an opportunity to change things up then that's how they start down the road of getting people like me to avoid updating.

They can be sick all they want.
They brought it on themselves.

Hit the nail on the head , Matt. It's the bundling or should I say bungling of security and features that causes many of the headaches and casts doubt. Phht! Sometimes, I want to get off the construction path, go in a different direction, and move to the fast lane on the highway. In short, I'd like to leave that crap behind. It's full of holes, and the work is never finished. Besides, there is less and less that's new, only a different approach on the original.

We've already been to the moon, and more will take the trip, but it will be different. Still, it's a trip to the moon. It will affect people differently. The first time was (or is) really exciting. For those who believe the landing was faked, you ain't seen nothing yet. Cue the crowd.

Planned obsolescence will get you every time. You can run, but you can't hide.

I got this one. Because during the life of an operating system, sometimes bad people on the Internet figure out how to exploit holes in the security. In response, the companies that make those operating systems release security patches.

In the case of Windows 7, it was released a long long time ago. And they can't keep making new security patches forever. Microsoft isn't going to dedicate their resources to patching security holes in Windows 98 for example. I mean that would just be silly right?

All this tech is new and it is evolving. Remember when the only contact your computer had with the internet was over a phone line? Things are going to keep changing. It's inevitable.

The reason they do full OS updates is because of limitations. The change from 32bit to 64bit for example. Your old hardware would not have worked with 64bit drivers and OS. There are features embedded in your BIOS that might not have existed 30 years ago.

A while ago, I posted about changing phones and the problem I had with .mp3 files. I have backups of those files, (they're certainly not stored anywhere in the "cloud", Google or otherwise.)
What p.o. ed me was I couldn't retrieve those files from my old phone and put them on my replacement phone, nor could I put any copies of my backup on the replacement phone. Nor could I save any photos from any "Album" I could only save photos from my "camera roll" I couldn't save any photos to my new phone.

Oddly, I also can't get some Microsoft updates to run, because the boot record of Windows doesn't reside in the "normal" place of the hard drive, because I have a "dual boot" machine. If I use the "default" boot I get this:
Image
My Dell laptop running "Snow Leopard" Once I was able to get an Apple operating system to run on a pc based laptop I quickly lost interest in it. Mostly because I found I couldn't manage where files were stored.
I'm not particularly worried about this.

These days, I use my phone for phone calls, and text messages. And occasionaly, directions, but seldom.

But they seldom if ever, tell you how exactly they exploit those holes.

Whenever I visit here, I always have to delete 0byte .png files from my temporary internet files, and I notice that registered user Google Bot is almost always logged on. Sometimes Google feedfetcher. If you think you're not being tracked here, you're mistaken.
I almost never use Google, because I get sick of their incessant nagging to install Chrome. Even my anti-virus wants to install it, if I don't tell it otherwise.

I suspected ghost might say something like that.
I have extremely few computer issues since I did two things.
1) switched to Apple and its UNIX based OS that is about a billion times more secure than the NT based Windows.
Sorry, that's incorrect. 750 trillion times.
2) stopped worrying about updating all the time.

On the rare occasion I have a computer issue I simply close the window.
If it doesn't want to close (and that does happen sometimes) then I power down and reboot.
The reboot kills any running software that was trying to hang my machine.
It was unable to infect my system so I don't have further issues after the reboot unless I do again exactly what I did to get a hang, which is always by visiting some website that would kill a PC, even one protected with Norton or McAfee or whatever your favourite flavour is.
Those products are scams by the way.
They create the issues and then sell you the cure.
Those .... are the nefarious persons ghost was referring to.

Since switching to Apple (and without ever installing an anti-malware product, because that would be a fatal mistake) I have never once had to recover lost data from a catastrophic failure; something I had to do more times than I can count when I was still in the PC world.
Yes, it meant giving up a fair bit of control over my machine that I was accustomed to having and yes I did resent it for a while.
About 18 months actually, when I realized my system was still stable, reliable and running fast.
That was when I knew it was worth it.
My current frustration with Apple has nothing at all to do with performance or reliability.
This Mac is the best computer I have ever owned and by such a wide margin that it is inconceivable for me to ever rejoin the PC world.
Maybe if they abandon Windows and embrace UNIX. Maybe.
I've looked at RedHat and a couple other versions of Linux.
If they become mainstream I may go back.
Not before.

An application's easy direct access to hardware manipulation that gamers love so much about PCs is the very reason they are so vulnerable.
I do absolutely remember those days when I was intimately acquainted with command prompt syntax for things like FORMAT and FDISK because of buggy, temperamental, insecure, spiteful, hateful Windows.

(Stop beating around the bush, Matt and tell us how you REALLY feel)

And let's hope they never do! That would be the same thing as giving "hacker lessons". Also, not everyone runs their updates (see comment above) so it puts those people at risk. You know - the "anti-vaxxers".

What an awesome analogy!

Thanks, ghost.
That's the nicest thing you've ever said about me.

Anti-vaxer ....
I think I like it.
At least when it comes to computers, anyway.

Ghost, I agree with you that updates are important, and that not enough attention is made to either management or upgrading. Boring and time consuming, I generally make it a habit of not only adding upgrades in a timely fashion to the various computers, but my wife Is reminded of the same. If the upgrade isn’t urgent, I may delay the install for a few days to see if errors or problems will get an alert by word of mouth, online, or through mainstream media. Yeah, like that never happens.

All this works until updates are no longer provided, forcing you to scrape perfectly good meat and potatoes off your plate, and then you are just as likely made to swallow a whole new main course, sometimes with a choke . Unfortunately, you are often served a lesser choice, perhaps, smaller or the update may include a free bloated side order which doesn't Interest you or give an alternative. :?
Oh, and those updates? That’s like fruit cocktail. You might find a portion distasteful where it would be best left out. The rest is just fine.

It's been my observation in life that Apple users are generally regarded as left leaners.
That's likely not true in all instances but the stereotype does exist.
And with reasonably good reason.
In the early years (2E and later) they were highly endorsed by your typical university educated types.
People with fairly apparently left leaning ideologies.
IBMs and what later became known to be PCs were strongly endorsed by what could arguably be called rightist business minded folk.
The gaming thing came much, much later.

I'm talking about a time when clear headed nerds were typing things like:
10 CLS
20 PRINT This is Awesome!
30 GOTO 20
and laughing their fool heads off.

Anyway, getting to the part that may possibly stretch the limits of the rules of the forum which I helped make ...
I find it humorous that right leaning folks who are "for" heightened security which will very likely lead to a reduction in personal liberties in areas of life that include travel/movement, borders, public conduct, use of money, etc. would be the same folks who endorse a computer system that is a basic free-for-all when it comes to security and the so-called leftists endorse a computer system that ain't letting none of that $h!t come through.

I mean seriously.
That is some funny life-stuff.
Ain't it?

I do love irony.

That’s a great observation, Matt. Kinda messes with the theory in television.studios, related offices, and control rooms, though. Lots of computers of all flavours: PC, Apple, and dedicated. That means left, right, and center in a mostly liberal media. :P
But, to re-enforce your post, a TV or radio station doesn’t always allow one to have a voice or individual identity. Those at home have a life of their own and the choice to flaunt it. In this, you are absolutely right about the culture and assumptions and, perhaps, computer preference,

Honestly, I thought I would derive a chuckle (or two) over my BASIC joke/sketch.
I figured that was the highlight of the post.
Maybe you ain't as old as you say you are.

Oh, yeah. I got the clever irony. Brilliant. As for Whippersnapper, that’s what I used to call my kid brother, so I’ll take that as a compliment. Thanks, bro’.

Keep rawkin’.

I remember coding in BASIC. On my Commodore 64.

I think the most amusing part of these discussions is where the "Apple People" keep referring to Apple vs. PC. "PC" stands for "personal computer". You know, like a MAC. A computer designed for personal use. A MAC is a PC.

I think the PC people started that trend, ghost.
There were tons of businesses in the 80s that used PC to differentiate between the two platforms.
PC World magazine is likely the most commonly known one but there have been dozens of magazines and hundreds, maybe thousands of retailers.
At the time, everyone knew that if you said PC you did not mean a Mac.
At the time I suggested to a computer store owner one time that we start referring to them by their chips.
I said we could call them Intel and Motorolla since there were clones of both platforms.
He just stared at me like I was a fish with two heads.

LOL
