Well, there's lots of 'em. One players "best" might be different from another's as taste differs from person to person.

Fender, Fodera, Alembic to name a few, make great basses. ....And after all, It's Fender that made the very first electric bass.

I always like to go with the innovators. Since the electric bass was actually invented by Fender, I am gonna go out on a limb and say...uhm...Fender!

I like Fender Basses and I have to say for the money that Squier Vintage Mod 70's Bass is not bad. I was at a store a few weeks ago and was toying around with a Lace Helix Bass and if I had the money I would have bought it on the spot. That thing was nice! Alumitone pickups and the body was comfortable when playing, thats coming from someone who is not a Bass player but have had two in the past and thinking of getting a new one. Leaning to the Lace or Fender Jazz!

The first I bought for my son was a Squier P-Bass Special!!
He loved it and learned quickly on it, now he plays bass and the guitar better than me. :x

There are a lot of companies.

Fender, Warwick, Ibanez, Sandberg, Schecter...

If you like it more exclusive try a Ritter bass.

cheers :D

I think for the money, best bang for the buck it would be Carvin. All the custom signature to your own spec bass(or guitar), plus all the exotic wood for under $1500. One day I'll own one.

For me it's all about the J Bass, so it's all about Fender.

Well, there is really never going to be a best, unless a company makes something incredible and patents every piece.

So far, here are contenders

Fender's Jazz and Precision Basses
Ernie Ball's Stingray basses
Gibson's Thunderbird basses

And more, but those are what I usually see. But really, it's a little different if I see something other than a Fender Precision, to be honest.

Oh yeah, I forgot all about the Ric 4001. Nice bass. Nice tone.

The top one is like the one I had tried out and it was nice. Lace Helix so it will be between that or a Fender J Bass

I like the tone of Fenders and Richenbachers (sp?) for the most part.
