I have no sentimental attachment to any era of music, but I've found that all of the music I have bought since taking up guitar is relatively old: ZZ Top, BB King, Curtis Mayfield, Roy Clark, Jeff Beck, Cream, Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Stevie Ray Vaughan.

I think it's because these are masters that have stood the test of time.

It sure would be nice to find some good guitar music that has been produced recently. Unfortunately I have too many rejects when I shop like that. My latest bad experience was a Robben Ford album that I owned for 20 minutes before donating it to the library.

Ha! I do the same thing with the library. That way, if you were wrong, you can check it out again!

Anyway, I like a lot of the same stuff you just listed. Here are two albums that I think have excellent guitar playing on them, just my opinion though.

Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
Wilco made this album to explore more of their Byrds-like influences. They also added Nels Cline on guitar. The playing is excellent and very original.

John Mayer - Where the Light Is
People like to argue about whether JM is a great player or not, but I think that you have to admit that his playing on this album (it's a live album) is great.

Since you're a library user, you should see if they have these. Then if you don't agree with me, you won't be out anything.

pete green's splinter group. circa 96-99. Those are the last albums i bought. The album before that was appetite for destruction.
Modern music is rubbish. The only current artist i've any time for is amy winehouse. Despite her addictions she's a good songwriter/composer not a bad guitarist and a good singer, not just another warbley dido/cher clone. Remember if you judge on addictions non of our hero's would pass.

Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton are both members of ARC Angels and Storyville.
Charlie Sexton and Doyle Bramhall II are both members of ARC Angels.

Then there is always:

Double Trouble: Been A Long Time. Excellent CD with lots of guests.

Tommy Castro's Triple Trouble with Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton.

In this perhaps jaded opinion, life is too short to spend time sorting through a musical pile of turds as big as a high school in hopes of finding a modern musical pearl.

Admitted: Normal playing fare extends pretty much from Bach to early 1980s. productions

I agree with Chet, Wilco is great! Check 'em out.

Here are a few of my favorite albums that are full of tasty guitar playing.

1. Earth- The Bees Made Honey In The Lions Skull

2. Yo La Tengo- I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One

3. Dead Meadow- Shivering King and Others

4. My Morning Jacket- Z

Search for a good rythym section and you'll usually find a talented guitarist playing with them.

I'm too old, too. I really want to like today's music, but I'm afraid all I really like are acts like Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Leona Lewis and the rest of the next British Invasion . . . and they've been labeled retro.

I think the best contemporary cd that has been released is Tom Pett'ys Highway Companion. It came out a couple of years ago.

Check it out...worth every penny.

Muse's Plug in Baby (and most of their other songs) has a great riff in it. Radiohead puts together some great riffs as well.
