I recently acquired a lovely used Fender Custom Shop 1960 Relic Strat. The certificate doesn't give much away, so I asked Fender CS if it had a build sheet, and they kindly sent me its shop floor traveler the next day.

The only problem is, it a bit tricky to understand some of the entries. So, I thought I'd ask if anyone can translate a few of the terms...

BODY
Sort: NO SORT
Control: NONE
Bridge Holes: OBS USE 0094247200

ELECTRONICS
Controls: NONE
Neck/Middle/Bridge P/U: 60 STRAT REL (what are these commonly know as?)

NECK
Fretboard wood: OBS USE 0016584001 (next line starts SORT F/DARK RW)
Fret Wire: OBSOLETE AM STD ("American Standard"? Why "obsolete"?)
Nut: OBSOLETE - NUT BONE (again, why "obsolete"?)

Sorr, that's quite a few questions in one go. Any help will be much appreciated!

I posted that a week ago after registering and it only appeared in the last 24 hours!

In the meantime, i joined another forum and asked the same question. I got plenty of answers, but i wasn’t totally convinced about some of the claims, especially multiple uses of the term “sort” which I suspect has an additional use in American English.

Any further wisdom would still be appreciated.

It doesn't always work.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

RE: Obsolete, maybe it means discontinued parts they still have in stock? Just a guess.

Regarding the American meaning of "sort", I don't think there is anything hidden there. It typically means what "kind" or "type". But it could also mean separating things by their "type". If you "sort" your underwear drawer, you are putting all the socks together, all the undershirts together, etc.

Yes, over this side of the big pond, we use sort the same ways: "what sort of wood?" "sort your guitars alphabetically", etc., though I'm not sure we'd *sort* a drawer so much as *organise* a drawer.
The reason I mentioned it was that one guy said it meant "sort for weight", which doesn't make sense to me.

To sort in this instance imo, based on darkness of RW fretboard. Say the line had to build 25 of this particular model w/ the same neck specifications. The necks would be sorted from all necks available w/ these specs and rated from highest to lowest based solely on the darkness of the rosewood and the top 25 would be furnished to the assembly line.

The pickups would depend on the year the guitar was built or what was available at the time of build;
Fat 60's, CS 64's, etc.
