I've got a G-DEC Jr that I'm not going to be using again. What's the best way to sell used equipment?

What has been your experience selling used equipment?

Thanks.

Ya know, I have had great success with eBay before. I doubt Brad and/or Fender would want to put a "Gear for sale" forum here. Truth be told, if you are set as to the amount of money you want for the gear, the local classifieds or Craig's List would be a better idea. If you just want to see how much you can get for it and not worried about the actual sale amount, eBay is the ticket.

Just my $0.02

I have always had excellent success selling stuff on Craigslist. AND there is no shipping involved.

Some local shops (with web sites too) do consignment selling. They take a small cut of what the instrument(s) bring in.

One near me does that.

I've had a lot of luck on craigslist. From my experience, if your equipment is in new or like new condition, you can expect to get about 2/3 of the new price.

Thanks. I just opened a CraigsList account and have posted it for sale. It's a shame to have good equipment sitting around unused, so I'd rather sell it.

I have a friend who sold two guitars on consignment, at a local music shop, and they sold fast, and he got the money he wanted.

Sometimes you get people on craigslist that will try to chew your price down to some unreasonable level or will come to try your gear out and use up a bunch of your time without any intention of buying. If you are careful about who you give your phone number or address out to, you should be OK. Good luck!

I've sold 2 basses on consignment, my Stu Hamm went in a week, my 6 string went in 4 months, but I got the money I wanted, and pay the cut to the store. I've sold stuff directly to the store too, but they'll give you wholesale price. You can haggle to get a little more if you want that way. Good luck with the Craiglist. :)

I've found myself legitimately trading in my old gear for something new and improved. 'Cept for this last time, not happy with that trade and gonna reverse it (hopefully!!!).

(Wish me luck on getting my Strat back! :D )

My impression of Craigslist is that it's one big internet garage sale. Good for getting rid of big stuff you can't ship, but otherwise it's haggle city.

Ebay is OK and more reliable, but the seller fees can be killer, especially if you use PayPal. Buyers don't have to worry about that.

Guitar stores can be a bit iffy. Many demand a 20 to 25% 'consignment' charge on whatever you sell through them. Check out www.gbase.com to find out what dealers are REALLY selling used guitars and amps for.

Nowadays, the average owner/seller really can't win, especially with the economy being in the toilet.

Is it really a secret that music store business is in the business to make as much money they can. They're not tricking anyone when they tell you they're offering you wholesale price on your item, so the can sell it retail. That's how they make money. Yes, the price difference is quite much, that's how they make the money. The consignment, you're using their store, that you don't have to pay rent and people come in due to their advertising. So I personally think it's fair what they charge. But that's me.
