Game of Thrones guitars for in excess of $30K. Ummm, okay. I don't watch the show ... I guess the price makes sense (to someone besides me, anyway) based on a bunch of gold leaf used to make the guitars, and the "master builder" who crafted them?

Cool gimmick. I was interested when Ibanez had their Alien Giger guitars and basses in 2006/7. I played one at Chicago Music Exchange (Reverb) in 2009. An RG model fast neck but normal RG sounding. Cool engraving though. 500 simoleons, should have bought that 6 string razor. https://ibanez.fandom.com/wiki/RGHRG1?file=RGHRG1_BKF.gif

You have no idea what you're missing.
There is nothing else like it.

Yeah, I am an oddball -- never seen one episode of Game of Thrones or any of those serial shows at all, and I really don't care to. When I watch TV, I watch a lot of sports, some news type stuff, some documentaries, and some reality-type TV (i.e., the Amazing Race, the Voice, Impractical Jokers, some Food Channel stuff).

Luvin’ the art in the building of high end custom guitars; but, like all art, it’s in the eye of the beholder. As I’ve quoted before, “A first rate soup is better than a second rate painting”, meaning price is not the only factor upon which to judge magnificence of such a thing. Were similar quality to be made outside of the usual known and accepted master builders’ locations, here and elsewhere, many things come into play where the art could come at a lesser cost all things being equal. Still art is unique, welcomed, and embraced on supply and demand.

As for GOT, it’s like a finely crafted book or series of books. Not for everyone; but, unless it’s story reaches you it’s hard to judge IMHO. For me, it is totally unlike some Hollywood actor portraying an ancient or medieval character with a $600+ modern haircut and a non period correct today’s accent and, perhaps, language or the featured starlet that looks like she’s a princess from Malibu. GOT actors are seasoned and that doesn’t mean a day at the beach. Ancient Robinson Crusoe costumes with speedos and flip flops from Survivor needn’t apply. No You Tube worthy home video made for TV reality (?) here. Or is that TV better fit for the back pages of You Tube? I get confoosed. GOT is the big leagues.

Unfortunately or FORTUNATELY Game Of Thrones, The Vikings, and other blockbusters like them aren’t part of the la de dah Network formula. Incidentally, HBO’s The Sopranos is, questionably, touted as being one of if not the game changer in how to do a quality TV series and it is said to be an example to follow (much like Coppola’s Godfather is taught in film schools).

Quality costs money and reduces profits. Productions such as these, without the long term bought and paid for contracted and clique performers and production types, are not at the top of the promotional list with the media moguls. We are starting to see mediocre what should be made for TV production transferred to the movie theatre, especially since satellites, downloads, and streaming are the norm today having, for a large part, replaced film distribution. This changes the offerings. The odd blockbuster brings freshness into the mix.

But, YMMV is totally understandable, and it’s all good or isn’t.
There’s Game Of Thrones and some television that deserves to be seated on the throne with a Royal flush.

Gary, thank you for sharing those thoughts. I agree and think that GOT, The Soprano's, Twin Peaks and the Walking Dead to season 6/7 are in the same arena of interesting television. I should mention that I liked The Strain, Guillermo del Toro is definitely in the same league with David Lynch, David Chase, David Benioff and Frank Darabont.

Thanks, for your post and observations, Rollie. Not that I’ve directed blockbusters for TV, but I have televised a variety of dramas including Chekhov’s and the bard of Avon’s.

I’ll admit I haven’t seen all those programs you listed; but, their reputation speaks loudly in the same arena we speak of. Some of the very best of anything has little following, and the opposite is true as well.

As we used to say in the biz, “There’s nothing new on TV”, and the art form was said to have taken a beating with the introduction of video tape recording believed to have introduced mediocrity as mass production was increased. The old “Video Killed the Radio Star” now has TV travelling to the Internet. Subtle introduction is how America's Funniest Videos changed the face of studio productions once the shirts in the offices saw the potential of home recordings and social voyeurism. TV is about to copy the crossover trend and strengthen their position even more on the Net.

I think many great productions come from multinational contributions. The creative juices available are outstanding with different views and abilities.

I’ll close with this. Did you know it was reported that, back in the heyday of Drive-In movies, Mexico not only made Fender guitars, but they made more horror shows than the total of Hollywood’s movies during the same period. I can’t tell you the details, but I can tell you I remember those scary flicks. 8)

Drive-in's where built for horror movies and lovers. The Harlem Ave drive-in and the North Ave drive-in, about 3 miles apart in Harwood Heights and Melrose Park respectively were the most popular. 4 or 5 horror movies in one night and those english dubbed ones from south of the border were as fun as those hammy Hammer ones from the UK. Gary I just caught a wave of nostalgia.

Yeah. Those camp horror shows at the drive-ins were a lot of fun. Especially, the ones you recalled, Rollie. We had 5 drive-ins in town. I think today’s little cars played a part in their demise. We used to have the odd movie marathon till sun up. We had a problem with sundown on the prairies, sometimes, just like the time Alien was playing, the screen would be washed out in the scariest moment. You might only have a soundtrack of a creaky door. As fast as the money would go at the concession stand, the action would stop as the movie came into view at the first sign of darkness. Then we’d all talk about what we thought we had seen or what we thought happened. We seldom agreed, and came back again to find out.
Here’s one to remember:

When I was a kid, my dad, who loved those movies, took me to an art show, and there was Vincent Price to greet us at the door before he showed off his paintings. He wasn’t scary at all; although, I did keep looking over my shoulder. :P

I couldn't watch that video jmattis but thank you for posting because it reminded me of how much I don't like any of those guitarists playing, whoops!
Gary, that movie clip of Jack is priceless

It's funny you mention Twin Peaks. Flying Lotus one of my favorite producers/hip hop/electronica artists does the soundtrack to the reboot.

Here's a track he did with David Lynch:

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't David Lynch just reading the opening of the script for Blue Velvet.

I've been doing some cultural studying a little and the Urban Alternative to the Drive in was the Grindhouse. A lot of the movie theaters in Times Square that were showing porno movies and sexploitation flicks were also showing Blacksploitation Movies and Kung Fu movies. This is why if you listen to some Hip Hop like the Wu Tang Clan (who got their name from old Kung Fu movies) you will hear a lot of samples from old Sunny Cheeba flicks. This is probably part of the reason that RZA has been doing soundtracks for Quintin Tarrantino movies since they use a lot of the same references just in different mediums.

Rev J

David Lynch is multi-talented Rev a good example to follow. Many great films from him.
