I know that Fender is all about guitars, but as someone who plays keyboards as well, I think this would be awesome haha. Any chance that we see a Fender keytar that is a MIDI controller?

I found this resource that shows the top keytars and I would love to see Fender make one.

After their tempestuous relationship with Rhodes I think Fender has had their share of keyboards.

Keytars - there is a reason they haven't caught like you might be expecting.

A lot of fads get a brief retro revival. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see bands start featuring keytars again -- but typically the revival isn't as big and doesn't last as long as the original fad did.

But Fender would have many hurdles. They weren't part of the original fad, so there's no nostalgia. And it's been decades since they've had any keyboard products, so they're way behind the keyboard leaders.

A lot of catch-up for a product that wasn't a huge niche the first time around, and most likely will be an even smaller market if there's a second time around.
-------------------
And many instrument manufacturers have gotten burned by trying to expand beyond their core markets. (Gibson's guitar division has always been profitable -- it was all the "other stuff" that lead to the bankruptcy reorganization.)

Roland/Boss has tried to market guitars before. They were great synth controllers, but mediocre guitars.

Robert Lamm (Chicago) uses a keytar on a regular basis.

FWIW

Keyboards have progressed and still are progressing in leaps and bounds with technology and accompanying equipment so much so that traditional piano and organ suppliers and retail has dwindled. Moving on to button instruments, accordions dropped in and out of favour to the point where some manufacturers looked to a restructure and other markets. One direction was found where accordion buttons (including rocker) replaced or supplemented switches on guitars. It was, generally speaking. a short lived trend, however.

Today’s toolbox of sounds presents a plethora of possibilities, and so one never knows what’s around the corner.

I guess it comes down to a battle of the instruments. Can a keyboard emulate a guitar or can a guitar emulate a keyboard better? Hmm?

Lemme see. Clapton on the keyboard or Jerry Lee on the guitar? Methinks not.
