Vinyl lives on.

Garth Brooks is one, amongst others, that has just released a few of those spinny things. I have to keep record albums and 10 inch reel tapes because I had a specially designed custom solid wood bookcase made to fit those recordings.

I have a small collection from the late 70s. The stack would only be about 2ft tall, maybe even less.
It's been in the record cabinet that was moved into the garage in 1994 when we moved here. The Techniques turntable is in my storage unit along with the rest of the component system and Yuge speakers when we integrated the TV/DC/DVD into the AV receiver 10 years later.

When I embraced the Compact Disc I unloaded almost all of my record collection.
I don't have quite as many CDs as I once had records but it's still a fairly sizeable collection of around 1,000 or so.
I think I had about 2,500 or so on vinyl.
I still have maybe 100 or so that could not be parted with.
I still have my old turntable but it hasn't been used in a couple of decades.
I also still have a cassette deck in my component stereo.
It too has not been used in decades.

I collect and listen to vinyl records. (imagine that) I'm not about to get into absolutes, but a vinyl record in good condition can sound better than a cd depending on the playback equipment.

I also listen to cds and mp3s (in my car). Partly because it is convenient, and partly because road noise and other limiting factors of car audio make those formats more ideal.

FLAC and other forms of lossless compression are possibilities, but I don't own audio equipment that can play those back, except my computer, which doesn't have particularly good audio quality.(which is why I don't rely on youtube for how guitar amps, pedals, speakers, etc. "sound")

YMMV

I'm certainly willing to admit cds sound better than they did when they first came out.

Wikipedia has some interesting info on digital recording as far as first digital recordings, first popular records recorded digitally, etc.

Thanks, for chiming in Rich. Never heard of those speakers. Rich. I inherited an old stereo/ tube radio and thought maybe the speaker could be used like a PA or whatnot. Not enough local AM radio to use this or the wooden Marconi tube table radio. A substantial CD collection, Matt. About 500 and climbing with dubs for me.

Appreciate the link. Vinyl. You are right about the CD quality which varies. I have test CDs and and a variety of limited edition audiophile CDs from early adoption. Digital has improved greatly, but standards have left it a ways to go as it is still immature. In the beginning I went to a blind test with turntable manufacturer Linn Sondek. A high end CD player lost out unanimously behind a curtain and in front of 25 professionals in the audio related industry. In fact they didn’t know what was being compared. One thing is for sure, all things are not equal when on the receiving end.

I’ve noticed some early industry CDs starting to dropout, definitely with earlier (even better) CD players because the decoders were failing or less sophisticated. My CD recorder will also record and playback MP3 to give hours of playing. I haven't tried it yet. Meanwhile, My near 100 year old records still play with noise and all.

We have a lot of record sales around here including a big one at the Convention Center yearly. They show up also in the mall. Twice a year the city has a day where you can rid yourself of free stuff in front of your home. CDs and records show up. I can pretty much record or playback any and all typical audio media, a lot because of my professional requirements that put me there; but, I am in the digital mode for convenience only, however, I’ve had a tape deck that can program and shuttle both sides of a cassette. That was before digital, but you heard the transport if it was in the same room. I’ve heard, had, and have synth (and discrete record and tape) surround sound, but it seems that always changes over time so I don’t invest a lot into it anymore like I did.

I do have a player that literally takes up no space. My Dad presented me with one of the advertised World’s smallest (1901) working Victrola Gramaphones. How small? Well. the six records are 2 1/16” each. I just got back from the mall and the independent record store is full of customers.

Cheers!
Enjoy the music however you get it or make it. :D

Don’t forget to add to the poll. Thanks!

LOL!... "Yuge" as in HUGE!. 15" woofer, 6" midrange, 1" dome tweeter, and I added ribbon tweeters that I bought at Radio Shack in the 80s.
Buddy bought them from a guy in a van in a parking lot in 1983. They actually sounded halfway decent and moved a lot of air, but at lower volumes, they can't compare to my current 7+1 Polk system.

My earliest musical experiences were with vinyl, which was still the dominant format into the mid-80s. When I was little, I remember playing Sesame Street albums, the Star Wars soundtrack and a bunch of book-record sets on a little turntable that I had for many years.

By the time I was old enough to start buying music, the main choices for consumers were CD and cassette. If I was really excited about an album, I'd invest in the CD version. If I wasn't quite so sure, I'd go cheap and buy the cassette (which were usually about $8-10 as opposed to $15-18 for the CD -- hey, $8 is a lot of money when you're in high school!).

These days, I get most of my music via digital download or, occasionally, CD. It's convenient, cheaper and more portable. I do a have a small collection of albums on vinyl (about a dozen or so discs at most), but I don't currently have a record player. I love the idea of owning a big record collection but don't currently have the space in my house to make such an investment. Maybe when the kids are bigger and most of their toys are cleared out. :) I agree that vinyl generally sounds better to my ears, but I'm not sure how much of it is simply nostalgia or the vinyl "mystique."

Well, that's absolutely no help to me. :? I still haven’t heard or seen Yuge speakers. ROTFL.
7+1 Polk system. Nice, Rich. You’re right about the old Radio Shack. They started out with some decent major manufacturer rebranding. I know their headsets were Koss for example. I remember in the 70s and 80s speakers like Soma and others were often large and found in all kinds of stores. Sometimes, they would be junk, and sometimes they would be gems. I ran across two small, not the best but decent and well built, Braxton’s that were 150 watts and $40 at a clearance discount store. Had I not known that they were German designed and Asian built I would have passed. But, that’s the advantage of being older and knowing the past. But, for your 15 inch speaker, not so common huh? Cool. At least until you get a better Yuge one. :P I have the pleasure of having decent JBL L series and Danish Dynaco mid ranges and tweeters waiting for, hopefully, a decent project if I can remove the beauty ring stuck on the JBL cab, because I like to blow old woofers. Or maybe I should say they blow.

Thanks, for the post schnepf13. I don’t want to appear that I don’t use digital, but it’s nice to have the option of grabbing music that is the original version. and/or unique with a tactile touch, album covers, etc. I have quite a few demo albums and oddities from companies like Maxell, Teac, Koss, JVC and so on. They just aren’t available on iTunes; however, You Tube comes up with records like this at times. Quality will vary, however.

Yes I have 33's 45's and 78's as well as CD's and cassettes. A small number compared to Bob (the bear) Hite R.I.P. He had around 76,000 or so I have heard. I miss record stores, they were great hang outs way back when.

Thanks for your addition here. SBLS.

I use to have about 500 chosen 78s which I gathered with the idea of getting a gramophone to add to my collection. That was before home computing, and I then gave up on my limited search for that Victrola which is much easier to purchase today, but also more expensive. It was cumbersome to haul those records when moving which we did a few times, so they went to a dealer, except for some special picks, and a more recent inherited box full that I have yet to peruse. I kept a 78rpm lesser turntable to supplement my main 33/45 one. At least with software there are alternatives for speed and audio cleanup manipulation.

Just think. The first sounds from earthlings to be heard, should there be aliens, could very well be from the Voyageur Space Craft golden record supplied with instructions on how to set up and play the disc.

Longevity of this record is said to be a billion years  and I’m betting the quality is better than pretty good.

I have all of my parent’s records, plus I’ve added to the collection myself! There’s something I really enjoy about the ritual of listening to vinyl. It’s more tactile and relaxing IMO. You can’t just skip ahead without physically finding the next track, and I like the imperfections of pops and scratches. I wish I had more time to listen to records the old fashioned way!

TGS,
I spent the morning reading posts about you and listening to you tube clips of yours. I'm glad you spend some of your limited time listening to vinyl records.

My hope is one day I can line up to buy some of your work on vinyl. That's the best I can offer to support you now. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram? Too many privacy issues. I don't do those.

I never really stopped collecting vinyl even when record labels stopped selling them in record shops there was always the second hand shops out there. Always catching up ones that I didn't buy when originally released filling holes in my ever growing collection.
The recent Record Store Day I scored Billy F Gibbons - The Big Bad Blues in Blue Smoky Vinyl limited to 500 copies.

I chose "I play and listen to records" but through the years and moving
around I've only kept some rare and favorite albums. At one point I had
about 500 albums, now about 35.
