I have no idea. I usually don't check the dates of many of the guitars I play, usually just the make and model. I like a lot of the new 2007/8's but I have no idea how they compare overall with other years.

I'm rather fond of my 1986 Fender MIJ '72 RI Strat.

I had a '69 Tele that was really nice. I wish I still had that one, but I traded it for an amp or something else in the 80's.

All of the Strats that I've owned through the years have been great guitars.
I like some older rosewood fretboards with the 7.25" radius, but also like some of the newer ones with a 9.50" radius and larger fretwire.

Maybe the best year is still yet to come?

Tough call here !

1950 or 1954

Tele or Strat

or should I say Broadcaster 1950
Stratocaster 1954

My personal favorite is 2004 the year they made my 50th ann Strat.

I believe Fender is indeed making as fine a guitar today as it ever has.

They're all good, and all perfect in their own right. My first choice would be a 68 strat, since I was born then. But I don't feel like paying $25k for that guitar right now.

I tend to be drawn toward 90's strats though. As models change a little from year to year, I really liked that era. Plus, the a little older today so they're usually broken in very nicely. My 94 mim is a great guitar, and my 98 mia is probably my favorite guitar in the world, at any price.

Not in THIS case.....'El jefe' with the cigaro wants 'the man with no name' to to take him to where the Custom Shop strats are built. You see, he wants Abigal Ybarra to wind his pickups. She comes from his village!! :P

I'd say the best years of Fender are the pre CBS/post CBS days. Not to say CBS Fenders are bad (I've played many a nice one) but Leo's original instruments are Holy Grails. I also think when the employees bought the company back in 1985/86 that quality became consistant once again. As Mr. Bill stated above, Fender is making some fine instruments these days.

Next year.

And ask me again next year, and you'll get the same answer, "next year"

I was reading an article the other day on the new Porsche 911, and I look at it the same way as I do Fender guitars.

Porsche is constantly striving for what they consider "Perfection" even though the mass media, and most of the drivers, loyalists and buyers already consider them "perfect" So every model, they up the mark, and say they'll keep refining until they get to what they consider "perfect".

I believe Fender is doing the same thing.

Well, since I just got my first strat, an '08, I'd have to say this year. I've also played a buddy's '92 that felt really, really good.

Yes - That is the correct answer. The technology advancements in manufacturing and components have resulted in a staggering level of quality.

Back in 1980, you had to spend at least $400 for a good guitar. That is the equivalent of spending well over a $1000 in today's dollars. Annnnnnnnd also back then, quality was very spotty for all manufacturers so you really had to test drive your purchase. Further, the entry-level instruments were horrible (any one remember those Memphis-brand Les Paul copies of yesteryear?? They were horrible and not terribly cheap either...). Today, entry-level instruments are lightyears more playable for the young 'uns.

Today we have a gluttony of wealth of all kinds of models. The bulk of which are extremely affordable ... from the entry-level "Hello Kitty" Squires to professional-grade MIMs to sweet-as-honey MIAs.

Yes. It is a good time to be a guitar player.
