I've been thinking about this lately. I just got back a Yamaha 5 string bass from my ex girlfriend that I haven't played in years. I keep it because it's the bass that went with me to Germany where I learned reggae from Africans in a dingy club basement. It's the bass that I brought with me when I attempted to relocate to Miami 20 years ago. It's the bass I brought with me when I relocated from Maine to California. I thought about selling it to a kid a few years ago but my ex talked me out of it when I told her about the history of me and it.

I'd certainly hold on to it, since it does have a lot of history with you. How does it play, by the way?

For a 20 something year old $500 bass with a badass bridge and EMGs not bad. I'm pretty much a six string bass guy now so it kinda feels weird to play. But like I said the history is there.

I get the "sentimental" thing. a few years back I sold my early 60's musicmaster and my Princeton. I hadn't played them in years, and had newer more gig ready gear. I talked to my mom first, and told her what the value is-after all she bought them for me as a 7 year old. she told me to do what I want.

I took the money, and bought new gear that should last me a lifetime. I don't regret selling them. someone else gets to enjoy them now, as someone will enjoy my current gear in the future.

I'd say hold onto it for a little while since you're just getting it back. See if it can become useful to you again. If you aren't doing anything with it after a few months, sell it and get something that can be helpful to you now. Not much point to keeping something that is just sitting in a case collecting dust.

I never get rid of anything including guitars, maybe I'm over sentimental.

There are some items in my life that I would never want to sell or get rid of. As far as guitars are concerned, the only one I would never sell under any circumstances would be an old Harmony acoustic that my mom bought years before I was born. It's the guitar she learned to play on and the one that both my sister and I learned to play on as well. It's old and beat up and not particularly valuable, but it absolutely has sentimental value.

Otherwise, I've had several guitars, basses and amps come and go over the years and can't say I've really missed any of them. For me, they are primarily tools to be used and if I need to they can be replaced.

Same here pretty much.
I've sold a few here and there when my interest waned and I considered hanging it up for good, but it always rebounds with a passion after a few years.
I've sold/given away 7 guitars since I started in '76. Of those, I regret getting rid of two... my first "real" electric guitar, and an aluminum-necked Kramer because it was SO cool and oddball.
One was a gift to my buddy's son, one was a Partscaster my boss bought from me, and one I sold back to the guy I bought it from after he got cleaned out in his divorce... had to sell his entire collection, so he bought my Epi Les Paul back after 15 years.
The other two were simply sales/trades of Korean POSs for cash or toward a good guitar.
I'm not counting the Ibanez JS I bought for my daughter. I wish she had told me that she was going to sell it, I would have given her 10% more than her best offer for it. Beautiful Kandy red.

I sold an inexpensive Raven 12 string that my wife gave me when we first got married. It did the job. Now I pick up other more expensive acoustics, but they don’t always beat that cheaper guitar in sound or playability. Lesson learned.

On the other hand, with anything vintage, there’s always a chance for regret. This holds true for many things. Take my drums for example. I got burnt when I consigned my ‘66 English drums and heavy (popular for the time) Zildjians at a music store. Long story short, I ended up with some originals and some good and bad English and American replacement because of a bankrupt company. I’d like a new set, but the works is 60s vintage and at my age I’m not about to make that move. That said, keeping your memorable guitar and adding to your guitar collection is a whole lot easier than packing percussion instruments alongside each other. :P Two or three harmonicas would be even easier.
One man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Of course, the reverse is also true.

It is true that you might regret selling vintage stuff. It's like that with any collectible. How many people look back with a twinge of pain when they think of the old comics or baseball cards that their moms threw out that might be worth a fortune today. On the other hand, *most* things of that nature never end up being worth anything, so you don't want to just hang onto a whole houseful of things that are just taking up space.

When deciding whether to sell/give away/throw away something, I guess you have to ask yourself a few questions: 1) do you actually use it? 2) is it truly valuable (meaning, are people actually spending good money buying these things) and 3) is there real sentimental value to it (like, "this guitar belonged to my father," or "my daughter loved this stuffed bear; it was her favorite toy for years and years)? If you can answer yes to any of those questions, then it's probably worth holding onto. If not, you're probably better off getting rid of it.

Well said, schnepf13. If one doesn’t get rid of that emotional or not which fell out of use, one will end up like this old fella having to rummage through the gatherings only to unload them later when there are no takers. Maybe.
Pity those people who obviously have no taste or appreciation. and know not what they’re missing.
Ah, well. At least we’ll miss it.

I'm right there with you FSB -- I personally find it kind of hard to get rid of anything! But as my family gets bigger and our house stays the same size, I've had to be a little more discerning about the stuff I hold onto. Otherwise, there would soon be no room left for us! :)

I have a few pieces of gear (guitars and amps) that I will hold onto
for sentimental value...some from these forums even.

I still have my 1980's Harmony H80T that my wife bought for me. We were just married and broke, but she saved a little here and there until she could get it for me for my birthday.

A couple of years ago the nut broke and I took it in to have it fixed. The luthier told be it would be about 60 bucks, are you sure you want to spend that much on this guitar? I told him "No problem, it's worth every penny".
