Finally getting around to posting pics of my Parker NiteFly and my '72 Ric-12 370 BYRD. Yes, that's a black vinyl "faux soundhole" on the Parker, LOL .... and those are 'glow-in-the-dark' dot-markers as well.
& BTW: This is the ONLY Ric-12 BYRD (that I'm aware of) ever built at the factory to McGuinn's original specs, that Roger has never touched.

I know what you mean.

The MC5 have been greatly overlooked.

Iron Butterfly had more cool songs than just In-A-Gadda-Da-Vee-Da.

The Chocolate Watchband should be more well-known...

bowlfreshener: I hope beyond all hope that somebody reads this or passes it on to a radio broadcaster with real brains that can start new programming on "oldies" stations to play all such songs..... It would be NEW to the majority and may even supersede all the crap that's out there now. If every musician on this site got the message & started resurrecting all those GREAT songs when they play out, it wouldn't take long before the DJ's took notice..... bands playing Louie, Louie kept THAT song alive to hit the charts 3 times over and it's been in a ton of movies as well. One of the oldest basic 'party' songs that cut across every campus and every band at the time played it. THAT kind of song power is in the hands of any group who puts it in their repertoire!

Imagine a band opening their set with Hot Smoke & Sassafras! Then following that with Diesel's Sausalito Summer Nights!! Slow it down with Persephone by Wishbone Ash and then WOW the crowd with King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man & Court of the Crimson King! Some real "knock you socks off material", eh? Of course, I wouldn't recommend an amateur bunch even attempt any of it as few groups ever had the musical Gonads to perform Roundabout by Yes, LOL (ANY-thing by Yes, actually) 8)

Sadly, I've seen and heard bands all over central NY state that were as good or better than many top bands on tour.... why didn't they "make it"? Family responsibilities, day jobs, house payments and people who just didn't like traveling all over the globe. Lynyrd Skynyrd-Rick Nelson-Randy Rhoads (etc.) fears of planes & flying..... worries about groupies, on & on. For some (Bon Jovi) it's worth it, but for others it's not, super talent takes a back seat, unfortunately.

BTW: An internet guitar teacher, Claude Johnson, is making a big deal about some Argentinian "virtuoso" electric guitarist. He's enamored because the guy can play super fast.... However, IMHO, you can't tell WHAT he's playing as his runs are a total (BS!) blur! Basically, he's TOO fast...... sorta like a 33 or 45 (old vinyl record for you younger ones) at 78..... ridiculous and (again, IMHO) ...... as stupid (musically) as that "Rock Band" computer-game BS, married up with Kareoke! Just my $.02

It's funny you mention radio as I was a FM DJ from 1993-2005, and eventually worked my way up to Program Director of a Classic, and a little bit of New, Rock station. Unfortunately, most of FM is not about the music anymore, its about selling advertising. We play music so hopefully people will listen to the ads in between the songs. Thats what radio is about. I worked in a small market, but if I added something a little too heavy or not mainstream enough I had my bosses and the head of the sales department upset at me because they didn't realize thats what the LISTENERS wanted to hear, because they were more concerned that the ADVERTISERS would freak out and not advertise on the station. I have been out of radio now for 3 years, miss it a bit, but am moving on cause everything is too stale, syndicated, downsized, etc...

Stale? Downsized?? The Gap between the rich and poor isn't filled with the the middle class anymore.... we are turning into a population of Southern Asia..... Sickeningly Filthy Rich and 'Untouchables'.... Welfare isn't an option anymore either..... it's a floatation device on a sinking sea-crashed jet to nowhere.....

In the mid 60's many HS & college bands could get 200 to 250 a night for a 4 or 5 piece gig..... in 1973 I bought a brand NEW LP Deluxe Sunburst WITH the form-fit hardshell case AND tax for less than $400 at Manny's in NYC...... today, what few clubs are left for bands to play in, still hand out about $250 for any size group (& even non-musician DJ or Karaoke) YET now we have to fork over 1,000 to 1,500 for a new LP. (All other well-known brands are similar..... Fender for instance, LOL).... and believe me, all you youngsters, it's TRUE..... a nickel candy bar WAS only 5 cents! A pack of Cigs or a gallon of gas WAS only a quarter..... what happened??? It's like the advertisers..... but it's not all "inflation"...... it's mostly GREED! AND....... "what the 'traffic' will bare... errr bear." hehehe

PS: I live in a small city in between a couple of much bigger cities and even though clubs in those large towns pay better, by the time you account for the gas to do a gig miles away, it works out about the same..... $50 a night per man profit...... better than nothing, but after 40 years, the same money? It still sux!

Well....we've been down this road before. When I was pressing my nose against the glass as a starry-eyed hopeful player at the age of 16, that '58 Stratocaster was $249. I eventually bought it, four years later, from my bandmate, when he upgraded to a Fender Jaguar. That guitar was almost two months rent to some people.

As far as the music market goes, this forum is loaded with talent, much of it capable of standing on the same stage with our 'heroes', too many of whom are prematurely no longer with us, prematurely horribly aged, suffering from hearing loss and who knows what.

I suppose one could argue that it would be easier with all that cash in the bank, but would it really??

In the radio market, demand brought back WNEW in NYC. The listeners voted with their feet, and indirectly, with their pocket books. You can find what you seek in venues like XM.

Years ago we took radio music for granted. Radio is a business enterprise.
So is guitar building, so have realistic expectations of Fender. Though, in the pure sense , we love their guitars, the underlying purpose of this forum is to unite us together under the banner of, and behind the letters on that headstock and to move product, in a variety of shapes and forms.

It is from these conversations that they will cull the bits and pieces which will eventually translate themselves into new ideas and new product. We serve as the witnesses to past, present, and future generations, free of charge.

The payback, is a remarkable group of friends. No better way to unite the world, and sue for peace.

I was a late night FM DJ in Texas in the early 70's. Things were a little bit freer then - but I still got called on the carpet now and again for straying too far too often from the almighty "playlist".
But I feel vindicated because I introduced a lot of people to Nazareth, Wishbone Ash, Rush, and Robin Trower, to name a few - beacuse I had a lot of friends that turned me on to these guys and I passed it along.
Of course, we were spinning vinyl back then and not pushing buttons on a computer....

Unfortunately, the 'business' end of the music biz is loaded with money-morons who have NO freakin' clue what music is all about.... they, like many club owners, are in it for the green...... and that's all they know.
Elvis got ripped off BIG TIME by his own manager. 50%?????? You gotta be kidding me. Was what Col. Parker did worth HALF of everything? NOT! (& I doubt he was any more than a kernel of corn, LOL)

READ the book by Richard Marx..... he went through tons of BS just to get heard. When a super-talented guy like him has to put up with a gauntlet of "Simons"..... it's a wonder he managed to stay the course. There are a lot of deturants to 'making it' and putting up with corporate AHs is a trek through a snake-infested swamp.

Speaking of which...... How people like 'Simon' (the Pie-Man?) have the audacity to sit in judgement of others when HE couldn't get up on stage and do what they do, is totally idiotic. Oh yeah, like Bush Jr. he has a daddy with connections IN the business..... it takes a jerk to spawn a jerk.

If you study History, you'll see that most of the people 'in charge' were sadistic lunatics..... some got their head handed to them, but sadly too many caused wars and other calamities that set the human race back centuries..... and it's happening again..... right now. Sometimes I think the only reason the 'Alpha-Dog' gets to lead the pack is because we believe he's destined to do so.... until we realize this 'gift from the gods' is really foam dripping off the corner of his mouth......
