Here's what I wrote the last time we discussed this topic (a couple weeks ago):

Sound quality aside, I miss the ritual of the vinyl album. Cleaning the record and the stylus, setting the stylus down without a *thunk*, turning over the album halfway through... It was almost a religious experience.

And I miss the big, beautiful covers of the 12-inch albums. We had a thread yesterday on the topic of album covers, and I nominated ELO's "Out of the Blue" as my favorite cover. With its huge gatefold cover and the fascinating paintings on both the inner and outer cover, I could study that thing for hours.

One more thing to add: Like a lot of people, I've replaced a bunch of my old LPs with CDs. I was listening to Queen's Sheer Heart Attack album on CD a few weeks ago, and the song "Flick of the Wrist" just doesn't sound right without the big *POP* that my old LP had in the middle of the chorus.

Both, but Chet nailed it on CDs being 'easy.'

I'd like to wax poetic about the warmth of vinyl. Alas I can't. Sure, it's "warmer" because you miss out on a lot of the stray harmonics. It's also easily damaged, even when used in the most careful way. Dragging a needle across the media is going to cause problems no matter how safely you use it. Yup, I miss the big album art. I don't miss the constant hissing and clicking though. I don't miss putting a nickle on the arm to keep it from skipping.

CD's are just better all the way around. Yeah a little more sterile, but sterile beats hissing and clicking and skipping.

I used to have seven or eight hundred LP's, now I keep my stash of the good stuff at a few hundred, the rest I put up with the CD sound, of which I have a whole lot of !!!

Just listened to Rush 2112 and Fly By Night on vinyl this morning and it was real nice.

what is cool is that so many record companies are now making LP's again and many are coming out in audiophile forms 180 to 200 grams.

ZZ top Tres Hombres is being re released by W/B at their site because sound matters.

Vinyl is my favorite for sure.

i'd choose vinyl because it's authentic to here how they make the music instead of today where they have all the mixing while back then (50s & 60s) all they was just a mic and their equipment

i'm not sure if they had anything else so don't bash me

I agree with just about everything you've said especially about the cover art. Back in the day I was an avid reader of liner notes, too. Today when notes are included, they are nearly microscopic especially to these old eyes. The classic vinyl LP provided a more complete experience.

With that said, CDs are more convenient, portable, less prone to damage, and sound better (except when the compression is sky high). Sometimes I think we have fond memories of the past and forget about all of the scratches, crackles, pops and hissing that works its way into the vinyl as it's used over time. Nothing was more maddening to me than to get a skip or scratch on my favorite track. On better systems you could adjust the tone arm, but when I was a kid, I had just a plain old record player and I'd have to put a dime or a penny on the arm to keep the needle in the groove.

I tried an experiment today. I played the Boston self titled album on both turntable (LP) and computer (CD). The LP does sound a little fuller.

The question I have is remember when CDs used to be recorded AAD? Now since everything is recorded digitally, does it really make a difference to record it to an album since now it will sound digital anyway.

To my ears, the recently recorded CDs (within 10 years) sound just as good as the albums of old.

I was probably the last convert to CDs in my area. The reason was, I went to a stereo store in 1989 (remember those? places that just sold stereo equipment only) the guy had a $2000 Bang and Olufson system and he put on Winwood's What The Night Can Do on CD. It sounded like carp. I think I bought my first CD in 1992.

From then on it's been nothing but CDs for me.

The reason I like CDs:
-more compact
-can find one song on a CD a lot easier than one song on LP
-the CD stays basically in the same condition you bought it (if your careful)

I'm getting tired of some of these CDs going green. Meaning, instead of plastic cases they're moving to more cases that are like LPs. Therefore, the same damage that happens to LP covers will now happen with CDs. I want plastic people. It seems like all these companies are just going green to get on the bandwagon. I remember I heard about global warming in class in the 70s, what happened to all those people who heard it with me. Oh yeah, they became Yuppies. Now they're driving Priuses.
Sorry, I digress.

That's a great way to make a decision , only listen to one. No need to compare and research,Nay!!

Well, i don't see your point. though i would love to have a vinyl record, i only have sgt. pepper on cd. Actually i think i understand... the more you put in, the more unpure it sounds. I have maybe several dozen songs on my ipod, but not much though. But on the other hand, some people like a diverse range of music. My older brother listens to EVERYTHING. Bach, MOzart, Beethoven, Green Day, Hendrix, Beatles, Jonny Cash, Beach Boys, Beastie Boys, COld PLay, SOme rap, Bob Dylan, the stones, you get the point. SO for these things i would pick ipod. But for listening to something and feeling like you're in the year that the album came out, i would pick vinyl. I would certainly trade my CD for the original Sgt. Pepper LP.
