I can understand the company trying to jump on the music game craze, but that's a bit outlandish. Products like Guitar Hero are fine for people looking to have some fun, but have no intention of shelling out money on a guitar. This is just ridiculous. If you were that compelled to look like you wanted to play guitar, $400 will get you a Squier and an amp as opposed to a piece of plastic which eventually loses it's replayability value.

This is just a bar room amusement like the golf and race car games. I'm not sure it merits a lot of concern.

Anyone who pays that much for that crap needs to take a serious look at their life.

Rock band I can sort of understand, its fun with mates and almost justifies the rather steep price tag...but this is just silly.

My son plays GH and Rock Band. He also is doing well, (taking lessons) and playing our shared Strat. He also plays the trumpet in the school band and enjoys playing a bit of piano just by ear.

As much as I think video games are a waste of time generally. (not that I haven't dabbled myself!), I am happy for my son to be involved with music at any level - even Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Oh, and - he's pretty good at both the real instruments and and the not so real.

I'm serious. Guitar companies like Fender and Gibson probably have a few rejects that they end up destroying and throwing away. They could turn the rejects into a revenue source by taking the strings off and putting the little buttons on, and charging $3,000 for them.

Pay it no mind. It's nothing more than "air guitar goes to Harvard" and not very much different from those incredible electronically programmed grand pianos. You can sit at the keyboard and 'play' Chopin like a great virtuoso.

Expect Fender to produce a Strat version of this if public interest and demand proves it to be an worthwhile venture.

Meanwhile, give yourselves points for being light years ahead of the wannabees.

Doc

I bought my entire first set-up (Squier Standard Strat + Roland MicroCube + accessories) for less than the cost of this controller!

"...with a limited edition price of $399.99..."

Oh my god. If you think the guitar is that cool, save up a couple more hundred and buy a real one and learn to play it. Come on. I just don't get it!

I've never been into Guitar Hero, either. Even before I began playing.
Sure, some people like to play it. But 400 smackers? Get a life!

The argument that some parlor toy or lazy way to make music will have dire consequences is an old one. My grandmother once told me that back in her day, proper young ladies learned to play the piano. Society people looked down on the lower classes and their player pianos and other mechanical means of playing back music.

So when (granted, very precise and expensive) devices found their way into upper class parlors ... SCANDAL! It would make young ladies of quality lazy and not want to learn to play. Why should they if they could entertain their beau just as easily by popping some disk into a high end playback device?

I have no idea whether or not "ladies of quality" play piano anymore, but I know (witness this forum) that dedicated musicians willing to learn the art are still here. Those toys and more will come and go but I'd be fairly confident in predicting the people will still be putting their hands, lips, fingers, etc. on real instruments many generations from now!
