It's really something that just catches you by surprise and makes you say "What's this?!" whether it's good (pick a song & put it here), bad (good luck), or ugly, yet pretty in a strange way ("Revolution 9"). I really don't know how to describe it in a just way that hasn't already been said.

So, I'll use their albums. Their early albums (Please Please Me - A Hard Day's Night) was what was in at the time. Again, something about them (the superior songwriting of the four and the rock-n-roll sound & feel) got the public's attention and started Beatlemania when they came to the US and played on the Ed Sullivan Show (where other artists like Elvis Presley got their big start). Their look and sound defined a new generation of music. A Hard Day's Night was also made into a film, which expanded their popularity. Their next 2 albums (Beatles For Sale & Help!) continued their "good boy" look (compared to the Rolling Stones). More hits were introduced and Help! was made into another movie. The next 2 albums (Rubber Soul & Revolver) were marking a new begining for the Beatles. Their music & sonwriting was getting deeper and more complex. It also brought a little bit of a new sound to the group.

But the big one was released on June 1, 1967: Sgt. Peppeer's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Pretty much the album that changed the rock genre. It was Paul's brain child; a concept of a "live" album. I'm not saying anything else about Sgt. Pepper's, just go listen to it. Their next album, Magical Mystery Tour, was another good album. A bit of a flop, though, due to Brain Epstein's passing. It had the same sort of evelutionary feel as Sgt. Pepper's did, but not the same kick. It was also made into a movie, but was not as successfull as the other two. The BEATLES (or The White Album) was where the creativity of all four Beatles was unleashed. It was an experimental album, a compilation of songs written by the Beatles during their trips to India. It was also the birth of louder rock, with a song called "Helter Skelter," which was devised by McCartney after the releases of the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and the Who's "I Can See For Miles."

Yellow Submarine was not as much an album as a soundtrack to the cartoon movie of the same name. It only had six rock songs featuring the Beatles. The other 7 can be described (I guess) as psychedellic classical; basically backround atmosphere for the movie. Let It Be was recorded in January 1969, but wasn't released until later because the group was unhappy with it. The film of the same name was also shelved till later.

Abbey Road was released September 1969. Though the band was barely together while recording, it is probably the most intreging album they've ever done. Just like Sgt. Pepper's, you have to listen to it, you really can't describe it! Let It Be (film and all) was realesed after the Beatles broke up. Another great album, actually half live, which words can't give justice to.

Really, it's the creativity that makes the Beatles so great. The songs my sound "simple and childish" to some people, but to most musicians, it's a wonder. You really have to listen to the albums more than once, twice, or three times to really get a taste of the mastery. I still feel like I've said to little!

I like the Beatles. As I learn more on my guitar, I realize how hard it is to write one song. Think about how many they wrote and how successful they were. My hat is off to them.
Here is a good website about their gear. http://www.thecanteen.com/fabguitars.html
Harrison wanted a Stratocaster as early as 1959 but could only find a Resonet Futurama.
about the strats they got near 65' the website says this. "Lennon and Harrison sent roadie Mal Evans out to "get a couple Strats," and Ever-Smiling came back from Grimwoods in Kent with two '61 models in a rare color (reportedly, Brian Epstein had agreed to pay for them if they were the same color). "
:D enjoy the website.

I love the Stones, too. But they haven't turned out what I would consider a "great" record since 1972. The Beatles haven't done it since 1970 . . . but they have an excuse!

I listened to the White Album recently. It sounds very dated, as does most other Beatles music. They were great in their day.
