I love the fab four, Help! and everything afterwards.

What makes them so great? Lots of reasons. I personally enjoy the impeccable songwriting. They got better and better. And they didn't seem afraid to be simple about it.

When they stopped touring, they did "promo videos" for Ed Sullivan to air so they could still be in the public eye and to avoid travelling across the pond. Genius thinking.

A'right, cool. But didn't people start making music videos when, say, MTV came out, when the only time it was possible for people to see them? So sure, maybe in the mid 80's they made m.v.'s, but I really don't think they did. And I have never heard of a Beatles music video.

The very first music video was Rain by the Beatles. It's on YouTube.

Actually before MTV videos (before they were even called videos) the Beatles made promos. Promos is what it was called back early in the day. I have a Beatles DVD of all thier Ed Sullivan appearances and 3 of those performances were show on monitors when the Beatles couldn't make it live on the show. The promos were:

Rain
Paperback Writer
Hello Goodbye
Lady Madonna

These were actually videos of the songs that the Beatles made of their songs only back then instead of being labeled videos they were called promos. So promos or if you want to call 'em videos existed way before MTV went into syndication. You can even buy a whole DVD on E-Bay of all the early promos that the Beatles had created just for their songs. A lot of these promos were aired on regular broadcast television before cable or MTV ever existed!

Don't forget the Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane promos. I remember watching them on The Ed Sullivan Show-as a original broadcast, when I was a kid, on a black and white TV, not as a DVD! I also remember seeing their appearance on 'Shindig '65', again as a original broadcast-they played 'I'm A Loser' and 'Kansas City (Hey Hey Hey Hey)'.

Check out:

www.soundies.net

Or look up 'Soundies' on Wikipedia.

If I remember correctly, the Beatles 'promos' were a convenient way (for them) to promote a new song without having to go anywhere-plus they were sick to death of traveling by the time those songs were released. I don't think that many (if any) artists back then could have gotten away with that with any success before then, as being 'live and in person' was the norm at that time.

Movies were always convenient vehicles for artists to promote their music since sound made it to the movies, but normally artists were either featured as 'musical interludes' not connected to the plot, or--well, just look at most of the Elvis movies. The Beatles changed all that with 'A Hard Days Night'. 'Help!' was OK, but I didn't think it was much more than a live-action cartoon with music.

I love the Beatles as well. They brought a lot of innovation to the music world.

I think their over rated. Sure the where original and influential in their hey day, but I dont think most music stands up to scrutiny today on many levels.
They did have some good songs though.
I think the Kinks where a much better band and had a much longer career.

The Beatles paid their dues many ways. As young kids from Liverpool they were sent to Hamburg's red-light district to learn the facts of life.
One of their founding members (Stu Sutcliffe) lost interest in the band thing during this time and quit, shortly after suffering a brain hemorrage.

The night before their first major recording session they had to replace Pete Best, who helped get them up the ladder a few rungs, with Ringo Starr which was Brian Epstein's doing.

Epstein, with his love for John and later, Paul, was constantly trying to shape them into something that they did not want to be, but did it and sold a lot of records. Epstein also died during their "Beatlemania" days.

In looking back, for all of the adversity that they had to endure, they wrote and performed some really great songs with good hooks.

Then came the downfall of "Apple" and their decision to only be a recording band. During the recording of the "White Album" it's been made public that they were at each other's throats which forced Ringo to walk out of Abbey Road and not return for two weeks.

How do I know all of this? BBC Channel has been running a great series called "Beatles Secrets Unvealed" for the past few nights. If you get a chance, it is indeed a good show and features many of their old "friends" from the Hamburg days.

The Beatles came along at the right time, everything they did made them what they are.
I am a big fan of the Beatles and have quite a collection of Beatles bootleg CD's and DVD's including The Ed Sullivan Shows, The Beatles Cartoons, The Roof Top Concert, The Last concert in SF, and several DVD's of promos.
My brother was in his storage unit recently and found several original Beatles 45's from the early 60's.

I think younger people today feel like lyrics should be moody and introspective, while The Beatles were happier saying exactly what they felt, both in lyrics and in real life.

Some people just like worshiping them... I know a kid, who lists in his favourite quotes "The Beatles are bigger than Jesus."

John never said that.

I saw another quote once that said something along the lines of "If a musician says they weren't influenced by The Beatles, they're lying."

It's true. You can pick out just about any pop genre today, and you can find a way that The Beatles changed, or introduced it. My metal friends don't even know about Helter Skelter.

I'm somewhat of a Beatles fan, I guess. I like a lot of their songs, some more than others. One thing that I always find interesting about their music, is some tunes just seem like they were ahead of their time, especially when I hear them on the radio mixed in with more recent music.
Take "You Won't See Me" from Rubber Soul, it's fairly "modern" sounding for 1965, IMHO. A lot different from much of the other music out there at the time.
The same could be said for "Got To Get You Into My Life" (Revolver, 1966), and "Hello, Goodbye" (Magical Mystery Tour, 1967).
State-of-the-art production probably had something to do with it, but they sure had a knack for writing great pop songs.
Just my two cents on the subject.

I feel like listening to "And Your Bird Can Sing" right now. LOVE that John/George dual guitar riffing! 8)

mac67, it's difficult if not impossible to explain it to someone who hasn't lived it. There are several excellent posts that attempt to convey the magnitude of their contributions and how they transformed from being merely 'flavor of the day' curiosities to being incredibly influential innovators in music and the rest of pop culture. They were the reason people could write "Rock" and "Art" in the same sentence.

I'm a huge fan and I could go on forever, but I won't. I'm glad you are trying to understand it. One bit of advice I saw above was to compare their music with the rest of music that was popular at the time. Probably difficult to do but it would be a great start.
