Hey, guys... What is so great about The Beatles? I don't get it. Sure, I bet they influenced a lot of artists and styles, and had great music overall... But why are they so popular? Is it their personalities, lyrics, style, story, or just the mainstream hype? I want some serious answers, please. Comment back.

Ima bout to have a Rutles moment

Some people say it was there hair or maybe it was there trousers or there sence of humor.

If you can sell that many records in the time that they did you must be doing something right (some people bought the records just to burn them in the "bigger than God" scandal

Listen to anything that came out before they showed up, then compare it to nearly everything that came out after they did, while they were still around making music as a band. You'll have your answer there.

Sounds like you haven't ever actually listened to the Beatles. Songwriting doesn't get any better. Their style changed throughout their careers so the early stuff is a lot different than the later stuff. It's not hype, it's quality.

Sorry, I have listened to 'em. Looks like this is going to be a hot thread for a while... Just to throw this out there, since it seems a little mistaken, I do think the Beatles are fine, even good musicians, I just don't get what made them so huge.

i guess it's because of their cuteness, and their sense of good songwriting. Later on the songs got MUCH better, and they became bigger every year. they got more mature and released better stuff. they were one of the first to expeiment in the studio. Listen to Sgt. Pepper's lonely hearts club band. at first, it doesn't sound like much, but think about it. those songs were all made in 1967. it was unheard of. (along with the Are You Experienced album.) no one could come close to that. they just wanted to make all of those weird sounds, since thy were hermitized in the studio. And the White Album shows the creativity of all four Beatles, and is considered their greatest album right next to Sgt. Pepper.

Mmm.. Ok, cool. Anything else, other than a cool, new sound, musical progression, and their *hmmhm* cuteness?

How about they were all excellent musicians, way ahead of their time, and 3 of them played multiple instruments, sang lead and backup vocals, and wrote songs that have been covered by musicians in many genres for the last 40 years. Not to mention they made some of the first music videos and revolutionized youth culture.

The times are what your missing. It's hard to imagine the impact they had. The Beatles showed up in the U.S. in Feb. 1964. One month later the top 5 spots in the charts were Beatles singles. There were 7 more singles elsewhere on the charts. In 1964 alone they had 15 million sellers, 9 singles and 6 albums...6 ALBUMS!!!, in less then one year. I'm sure you can't even imagine a band doing that today. They were huge. Bigger then anything you've ever seen. And they just kept getting more popular. Then more oontroversial. They led the hippie movement. They were gods to the counterculture. No one was close in using their imagination to change music. The ENTIRE WORLD was in love with them. For 6 years everything they did the world did. They grew their hair, the world grew it's hair. They grew facial hair, the world grew facial hair. They wore bright gaudy clothes, the world did too. For 6 years. The Beatles were more then a band man. They were a world changing social phenomenon. Maybe you just had to be there.

A'right, cool. But didn't people start making music videos when, say, MTV came out, when the only time it was possible for people to see them? So sure, maybe in the mid 80's they made m.v.'s, but I really don't think they did. And I have never heard of a Beatles music video.

The very first music video was Rain by the Beatles. It's on YouTube.

All, right, we are good. I now guess I know why the group was such a big hit. We don't need to comment anymore. Vote on the poll if you want, though.

Good songs. One of the first "self contained" groups to write and record their own material.
Granted they did do a few covers, but this didn't last long.
A unique "sound" for the time.
Quick wit, press ate up their responses.
Fast output of music. Two or three albums a year plus two or three 45 hit singles. Hits were not packaged into the UK album releases, unlike the US releases.
Willing to experiment with different song styles and arrangements, and wanting to experiment with different techniques in the studio.
Having George Martin as a producer didn't hurt. Helped them acheive the sounds, instrumentations and arrangements they were after.
Having a fairly good businessman in the music business as a manager.
They always seemed to be one step ahead of everybody when it came to creative ideas, leaving other bands to copy their latest release, ie Stones, Kinks, Dave Clark. Not all bands - Byrds and Who were pretty different, but certainly didn't match output.

These are some reasons I feel they went over so big.
Again, great songs. Still hold the record for most hits in the top 10 at any time on the Hot 100.

Actually before MTV videos (before they were even called videos) the Beatles made promos. Promos is what it was called back early in the day. I have a Beatles DVD of all thier Ed Sullivan appearances and 3 of those performances were show on monitors when the Beatles couldn't make it live on the show. The promos were:

Rain
Paperback Writer
Hello Goodbye
Lady Madonna

These were actually videos of the songs that the Beatles made of their songs only back then instead of being labeled videos they were called promos. So promos or if you want to call 'em videos existed way before MTV went into syndication. You can even buy a whole DVD on E-Bay of all the early promos that the Beatles had created just for their songs. A lot of these promos were aired on regular broadcast television before cable or MTV ever existed!
