I'm not sure if this is a guitar or amp question. I was at the Seymour Duncan web site because I wanted to hear samples of the different pickups. They give clean and dirty options. But I'm not sure how the user would alter his settings to make a dirty sound.

How do we get a dirty sound from a pickup? Is it the amp or the guitar?

I'm used to playing with modeling amps and they have "clean", "blues", "crunch", "metal" and names like that for the various settings. I understand what clean is, but am not sure how to induce dirty. Is dirty related to the amp model names I'm familiar with?

Thanks.

Its an amp setting dirty= distorted or driven. anywhere between crunch and insane on a modeling amp.

I'm not an expert on pickup tonal options, but I'd say it has something to do with the tone control knob. Like at a certain point its better for overdrive or clean.

Just a guess, like I said. :?

dirty is just a different word for driven....

it is just so that you can hear the pickup clean and with distortion....

It's mostly amp. Adjusting your guitar tone and volume controls can help, but it's still mostly dependent on the amp. It also depends on what kind of guitar and pickups you're using, too!

I once had a hard time looking for a guitar/amp combo that would give me a choice between clean AND/OR dirty with the turn of a knob. Marshall JCM 800's didn't give me enough clean at any level. Old Fender Blackface Bassmans did, and yet would still get distorted/dirty with the volume up past 5. I'm sticking with my Bassmans.

Or you can keep your guitar pickups stock and use Mile Fuller's (Fulltone) OCD pedal. Visit www.fulltone.com This is currently the overdrive pedal that Robin Trower is using to get his overdriven sound. You can get a dirtly sound by cranking your amp to 10, turning up the gain on your amp, use pickups that distort more or add a pedal. Many different ways to achieve the dirty sound, but if you do not feel comfortable switching out your guitar's pickups just use the Fulltone OCD overdrive pedal or crank and push your amp to 10 and turn the gain all the way up.

One of my friends used to have a small 20-30 watt practice amp, I believe it was a Danelectro, not sure, as that was years ago before I convinced him he needed a real amp to play gigs with, that had a "Dirty-Sweet" knob on it, that went from this sweet clean sound, to this raunchy, nasty overdrive. It was my favorite knob on any amp I've ever played.

I wouldn't really call it an "gain" knob, so much as an effect knob, but either way, the original post made me remember that amp. Now I want to call him and see if he still has that combo.

I don't plan to change the pickups on my guitar. I've read so much about aftermarket pickups that I thought I'd check into them to see what it was about. (But if my son loses interest in his Mexican Strat and wants to give it to me, then I'd replace the pickups with an aftermarket set.

OK, another amp question then. I have a '70's Fender Twin Reverb, has nothing but clean tones, no gain knob. If I just turn the volume up, will that create a slightly dirty tone, without the use of any pedals? Just curious to see what my amp can and can't do (without any other modification, playing my std usa strat).

since it is a tube amp it will break up and give you a nice overdriven/distortet tone when you have the wolume higher up, but since you have a Twin Reverb you will be deaf before it is loud enough!! :)

The answer to that is a resounding "yes"! The amount of overdrive on the tubes determines the "dirty" or "crunch" sound you get from your amp. Most of this overdrive is gotten from the amp itself. If there is no gain knob, then volume is the best way to achieve this sound.

The type of your tubes plays a huge roll in this overdrive due to the fact that this is where the overdrive occurs. I believe on the Twin Reverb there are 6 Pre-amp tubes and 4 Power tubes. Depending on the brand of tube you will get subtle differences from the sound.

Just to add an additional item: When you change Power Tubes you will have to have your amp's bias voltages adjusted. Bias is the actual voltages that are applied to the different elements within the tube. If the plate gets too hot, it shortens the life of the tube considerably. If the Bias voltage is to low, you don't get the power output you should. This won't apply to the pre-amp tubes, just the power tubes.

HTH!

I can't help myself. I've been looking at it for days, trying so hard to hold myself back. I can't take it anymore though.

Why hasn't anyone made an obvious bathroom joke about the name of this thread? How to make dirty? Oh oh...I gotta go make dirty! Mommy...I made dirty in my pants.

I could do this all day. I need professional help.

Dude, therapy is screaming for it's poster child! Seriously.

I can't tell a lie, I chuckled as soon as I read your post. So I guess I need a little counseling as well.

When I read the topic, it was the first thing that crossed my mind . . . but I'm glad you confessed first. :P
