After many decades of music listening it has come to my attention that there are a few "words" or "concepts" in the various genres of music that are focal and without them the genre might be reduced to a shadow.

In popular rock: "Love" (the hormone induced quest or the limerent state of desire)
In classic country: "memories," "Hank" or Old Hank," "leavin" or "leaving"
In Blues: "baby," or "my baby," and "blues" or "blue, " and the phase "I said"
Metal: "Hell" or the concept of it. (I confess to listening to much "Metal" but this is my impression)
Contemporary Christian: the phrase "you are" and "God" or "the God"
Modern country: "country" (used to identify the artist as "country" because you would not otherwise realize it) "truck" "girl"

Well these are some there are others if anyone wants to chime in.

I'm not sure about being 'reduced to a shadow' but I get your point even though
I've heard most of those key words in blues, rock and country a lot.

...And without writing it out here, I think we all know what the quintessential word in punk rock is...

The "perfect" country song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QUSQJQml40

What John Prine, Arlo Guthrie, and Kris Kristofferson and others had to say about Steve Goodman.
It's a long video, but interesting. Paul Anka? Samantha Eggar?

Cheers,

Is it fair to say that every rock or hard rock artist at some point has to make a song about someone called Johnny?

There are certainly formulas you can use, especially if you want to have a catchy song. A good example is write in in the key of A. For some reason, that resonates with a lot of people. Think of how many songs that have been popular with that key. How many songs you can play with just three chords of A, D, and E in them, as an example, not even talking about all of the variations, like minors and 7ths, or whatever.

What prompted me to post this was a video of Journey live singing "Stone in love" (1981) well seeing those young guys strut around and I recalled when I was that age everything in life revolved around pursuit and acquisition of girlfriends. In the intro Steve explains the genesis of the song. How finding a new girl would turn your gloom into gladness. Well the power of that type passion is the seed bed of RR music.

Great video oneal lane. Love was a big part of those Journey songs. My experience with Journey was the first three albums, the subjects in addition to love included mysticism and magic, revenge and redemption https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pp4FYru7uO4

Took me awhile but I think I've got it. The word Quintessential. Jimi Hendrix, the Quintessential guitarist/singer/songwriter.
