Here's some answers about what happened to some.

Benny Mardones - Into The Night, got hooked on cocaine. I guess he cleaned up and is still playing songs.

Boomtown Rats - I Don't Like Mondays. Check them out on YouTube, they have other good songs. In fact, the album Tonic For The Troops is excellent.

Different Drummer - Stone Poneys. The girl lead singer went solo (Linda Ronstadt) and 2 or 3 guys of the backing band became the Eagles.

Fantasy - Aldo Nova. He had a few other minor hits. His albums Aldo Nova, Subject, and Blood On The Bricks are excellent.

I Fought The Law - Bobby Fuller Four. They had other minor hits. Check out the songs Love's Made A Fool Of You, and Let Her Dance. He died in 1966, murder or suicide, who knows?

The Rapper - Jaggerz. The lead singer and songwriter is Donnie Iris who had is own one hit wonder with Ah Leah. Yea, I know, never heard of it. Just check it out on YouTube, you'll go "hey, I remember that".

Argent - Hold Your Head Up. Two of the members (the drummer and bass player) went over to the Kinks and helped Ray and Dave Davies through what I consider the most consistent Kinks period. They were on the albums Low Budget, Give The People What They Want, and State Of Confusion. Russ Ballard was the lead singer of Argent. He had his own one hit wonder with the song Voices during the mid 80s. But perhaps he is better known as a songwriter. He wrote God Gave Rock And Roll To You, You Can Do Magic for America, Winning for Santana, Since You Been Gone for Rainbow.

Supposedly the biggest disappearing act in pop music was Zager & Evans who did a song called "In the Year 2525". One album with one Top 40 single.

One of the most covered tunes by a band called The Ides Of March had the song called "Vehicle."

Personally, my favorite 'one-hit-wonder' of all time has got to be:
1969's Hot Smoke & Sassafrass by Bubble Puppy .... incredible tune!
BTW: They are still playing and they even have a web site! Check it out!
(simply: bubblepuppy dot com) "Most Feared Opening Act In R&R History"

My #2 pick is: Sausalito Summer Nights by Diesel.... (close call too)

These two are interesting:

Magnet and Steel - Walter Egan
On Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty

IF Layla qualifies (not for Eric Clapton but for Derek & the Dominoes) I'd put it at #3 on my list.....

1) Hot Smoke & Sassafrass by Bubble Puppy

2) Sausalito Summer Nights by Diesel

3) Layla by Derek & the Dominoes

I know that one.

It's funny because I was at Borders a week ago and they had the album A Different Story by Deadeye Dick for $4.99. The price tag was faded, but the CD looked ok. Sure enough, when I went up to buy it, it had been sitting there so long it was out of their computer system.

I bought the album because it's one of those albums I remember for one hit song, but I couldn't remember the song. Anytime I'd see it in a used CD store, it would be $8.99. I figured $4.99 is good enough for one song.

Well, I took home the CD and the one song that was the hit on it was New Age Girl.

The rest of the songs on it aren't even worth talking about.

I'm not sure if Layla by Derek & the Dominoes qualifies? I recall hearing other tunes like 'Bell Bottom Blues', 'Tell The Truth', 'Let It Rain' and 'Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad' on the airwaves, but it was a great album and Tom Dowd did a great job as producer.

Most artists that had albums out (rather than just one hit off from a 45) may have only had a single hit off the entire album, yet some of the other tunes DID get air time. Question is: What qualifies as a "Hit"? Does it have to make it into the top 10? Top 40?? or top 100???

Besides, you don't hear much about 2-Hit Wonders, do you? Yet there are a few that come to mind.... ? & the Mysterians (their follow-up never did as well as 96 Tears, but it DID get played.)
Sam the Sham: Wooly Bully & Little Red Riding Hood
the Romantics: Talkin' in Your Sleep & What I Like About You

3-Hit Wonder: the Classics 4 (Denis Youst) Spooky, Traces & Stormy

PS: I'm surprised no one's listed Iron Butterfly's In a Goda DaVida  (or however it's spelled)
