I think this is a pretty dead on and articulate explanation from Diamond Dave.

I've seen several segments of that interview. All very intriguing.

DLR could well be a candidate for "most interesting man in the world". He's always so ebullient that it's possible to mistake him for an annoying clown, but he's surprisingly intelligent and thoughtful.

Thanks, for the post, Rev’. DLR nailed it really well.

Reminds me of Duke Ellington’s explanation of cool (and/or hip). He goes on to set a tempo with the tapping of his foot, adding an off beat snap of his fingers. That’s cool? Not yet. He continues and tilts his head back and forth to one side to the beat and, perhaps the odd double beat, of the foot. Now that’s cool. 8)
David Lee’s rehearsal and song writing was good too.

Bassist James LoMenzo tells a story about working for David Lee Roth. They were rehearsing for a tour and the last rehearsal time got moved up an hour. No one told him and he showed up late. Roth looked at hime and said "LoMenzo! What time does rehearsal start?"

LoMenzo replied, "7:30."

"Wrong I fired you an hour ago."

After a little discussion it was sussed out that there was a miscommunication.

Here's a cool video about Van Halen that points out some really hip stuff that I never noticed about "Runnin With The Devil":

There's more than a little Jazz happening there.

Breaking jazz into parts has always been a futile endeavor IMHO YMMV. Feeling, love to play music was always the incentive for jazz, to play outside the boundaries of the songs main riff and embellishment of melodies. I imagined musicians that were not allowed to play with mainstream acts jamming to popular songs and discovering counterpoint and other elements to use within those songs. Think Louis Armstrong.
Compare and which one is jazz.

Okay. I’m thinking Satchmo . . .

You is or you isn’t Jazz IMHO. Dig? 8)

Horn arrangement by Steve Vai, horns recruited by Greg Bissonette from the Mirv Griffin band.

Great video Gary! King Louie! Dave's jazz sensibility is remarkable. Thank you for posting Rev. I think he liked this artist pop-jazz, sometimes called rock and roll among other things.

David Lee made a good one with that song, Rev’. Liked it from the get go.

Prima was one frigid cat. Louis not only shared the name with Satch, he also shares in the growl and the horn. Both are well into my collection with Keely. Great selection, SBLS.

My short Louis Armstrong story:
At work where the radio station was down the hall, I was playing a high end thick audiophile Coral mono 33rpm LP recording called Louis Armstrong at The Crescendo. Great record. Anyhow, my DJ friend and his guest walked through the audio control room where I was working. My buddy introduced me to the stranger and told me he was a major Armstrong collector upon which the guy offered me $100 on the spot because, amongst all of his massive collection, he didn’t have my personal record. A light went on and I decided (since $100 in ‘67 was big money then) it would be best to hang onto it.

I still have it and with mainstream tape, LP copies, and the Internet the market changed to Louis’ worth (except for rare and hardcore) of about $15. That’s how things can turn. Still enjoyable though. :P
