so today I pull out my iron butterfly cd for a short trip. haven't listened to it in years- forgot how much I loved it. I especially enjoyed the drum solo-a great one, but the tone of the drums really stood out. I found myself digging out some cream to hear toad, and led zep to hear moby dick.

any other great solos I am missing?

Still one of the greatest drum solos ever, played by yesteyear’s and today’s famous rock drummers, some jazz drummers, and marching bands. I give you not only Drums A-Go-Go (the devil made me do it, phreddybee), but also one of my faves Casbah. The guitar rocks too.

Then there are drummers that are beaters, and those who talk the talk. Best of all there are those who walk the walk. Here are some some who do just that, and this gives one a comparison to set a standard by (you’ll find some of your great picks, SBLS).

Was your fave amongst them? Mine were. There are more. What? No Ringo? Phtt! No Keith Moon? No Charlie Watts? No Phil Collins or Dave Grohl? Well, maybe they made the next 100 - 200 of best overall drummers. Of course the best rock drummers standards may, at times, move their score in the ratings where the best overall drummers could move or remove them from their best overall list. Best is relative . . . I prefer better because I’m not the best at anything, but better than some.

the in a gadda da vida solo is so good-makes me glad I was alive when all theses great bands were just breaking out. my band would do "toad" at weddings in our high school years. we knew around graduation we were near the end, as some of us were moving away. didn't get a lot of great reaction to a 10 minute drum solo!

Keith Moon of the the Who is amazing to listen to. In Pete Townshend's book, he complained about Keith's and (bassist) John Entwistle's rhythm section because they would interplay around the beat instead of emphasizing it. As such, Pete felt compelled in his own playing to emphasize the beat more than he wanted to.

But yeah, give it up for drummers! Neil Peart is another fantastic example, though many in the drumming community believe he is overrated (unfortunately). Whether the case, I think he is awesome and a great player!

Yup! Jack is the fourth one on the list.

I would like to have seen Elvis’ drummers D.J. Fontana (1953 - 1968) and Ronnie Tutt (1969 - 1959) added. Count the numerous hit songs, major and minor performances (if you can find a minor Presley performance) including Vegas, and having to adlib on the spur of the moment with the King in whatever the situation. It must have been a challenge without missing a beat. They both earned their stripes IMHO.

Other than that, I think the list is pretty well done considering. I and you may have other favourites; but, I wouldn’t omit any of the ones mentioned.

FSB,
Thanks for schooling me about Ronnie Tutt, I never knew he played in Elvis' TCB Band. I did get to see him in the Jerry Garcia Band. I also got the unique opportunity to see Billy Cobham as a stage hand at Lisner Auditorium from directly above on the catwalk above the stage for the lights while the show was in progress. He was playing with John Scofield, George Duke, and Alphonse Johnson. Fortunately for me, all my work was before or after the show.

You are most welcome, vinyl. Ronnie Tutt was amazing with Presley. There is a a lot of interesting stuff about him and with him on You Tube and the Net. He’s a character to boot.

It must have been cool to see the great Billy Cobham too. :D I got to see Rich twice with upfront seats the second time. The Guess Who and most better known local musicians all showed up. What he can do with a small set is amazing, but it’s what you don’t see easily that is outstanding. I watched him single stroke roll with the back end of his stick under and over and back under the highats all the while keeping up with the other hand.

Incidentally, Krupa is noted for his brush work and I have the only version of an LP made where he and Rich competed both together and separately. The cool thing is the individual cuts tell who the artist is, but the solo battle does not and you have to guess.

Thanks to BMW 2002Tii over in Vintage Guitar Amps, I think this guy deserves a little love.
Michael Shrieve. Just 4 drums, 3 cymbals, and a hi-hat.

Michael Shrieve. Definitely. He can talk the talk. One of the better drum solos I’ve seen. It’s always interesting how double pedals, triggers, and a big kit sounds. Even I can sound good. but, great on a small kit . . . well, that’s another matter. Mind you, it is possible to sound like dung on a big kit too. Thanks for posting it, vinyl.

Cool Family Stone song, SBLS.

Gotta give love to the girl. Her daddy's no slouch at the skins too. Sheila E.

. . . and this is what happens when a famous drummer gives love to a guitar:
